Early-entry workers who enter treated areas to perform tasks that involve contact with pesticide residues must wear the appropriate PPE. Pesticide labels list the minimum PPE that must be worn. Employers must discard coveralls and other absorbent materials that are heavily contaminated with undiluted pesticide having a DANGER or WARNING signal word. When using a closed system to load and mix pesticides which have a DANGER or WARNING signal word, handlers may not be required to wear all PPE listed on the label. However, they must wear (1) a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, (2) shoes and socks, (3) a chemical-resistant apron, and (4) protective gloves as specified on the pesticide label for mixing, loading, and other handling tasks. When using a closed system to load and mix pesticides which have a CAUTION signal word, handlers may not be required to wear all PPE listed on the label. However, they must wear (1) a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, and (2) shoes and socks.

Commercial applicators must provide notification information to growers before application. Employers must notify all workers who will be within 1/4 mile of a field during pesticide application or the REI before applying pesticides. Notification may either be oral or written (posted sign at entrances to treated sites). Some product labels may require both oral and written notification. This information is printed within the “Agricultural Use Requirements” box of the product label. If required, posted signs must be erected within 24 hours before application, and removed within three days after the REI. If posting information is printed outside the “Agricultural Use Requirements” box on the product label, then the commercial applicator must post the field.

About United Cooperative ...
Farms with employees outside the immediate family must also: • Notify employees of pesticide applications that might affect them • Post, at a central location, certain information about safety, applications, and medical assistance (pages 33-34) • Provide training on pesticide safety before work begins and at least once every five years (pages 25-28) • Provide transportation to medical facilities (pages 35-36) • Provide decontamination sites within 1/4 mile of all handlers and workers (pages 29-31)
Agronomy locations
The WPS requires all farms to comply with: • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) requirements as specified on the pesticide label (pages 79-87)* • Restricted-Entry Interval (REI) as stated on the pesticide label (pages 41-47)
• Bulk fuel • Bulk propane • Convenience stores
The label for a product covered by the WPS will contain an “Agricultural Use Requirement” box. Text in this box will begin with the sentence, “Use this product only in accordance with its labelling and with the Worker Protection Standard, 40 CFR Part 170.” After Oct. 23, 1995, all products within the scope of the WPS must bear the new WPS labeling when distributed or sold to any person. Before October, 1995, retailers are encouraged to deplete inventory of products within the scope of the WPS and without proper WPS labeling.

This guide is intended to help you comply with the Federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS) which regulates pesticides used for the production of agricultural crops on farms and in nurseries, forests, and greenhouses. Since Jan. 1, 1995, compliance with the WPS is mandatory for all agricultural employers, including farms. If you have employees handling pesticides (those who handle, mix, load, and apply pesticides or clean and repair application equipment) or agricultural workers (those who perform tasks relating to the production and harvest of agricultural plants), obtain a copy of EPA’s “How to Comply” manual from your county extension office or the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), (608) 224-5012.
