[email protected] Schwan’s Food Service, Inc. Announces National Partnership with Feeding America Minneapolis – (July 10, 2011) – Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., the country’s largest provider of pizza to schools, announced today that it has become a supporting partner of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. More than 17 million children, or nearly 1 in 4 children in the United States, are at risk of hunger, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Feeding America network, comprised of more than 200 food banks that serve every community across the country, helps feed nearly 14 million hungry children annually. In response to these startling statistics, Schwan’s Food Service has initiated its partnership with a commitment to donate 1 million meals to Feeding America over the next year. “We are very proud to celebrate this partnership, which we anticipate will be a long-term collaboration, where we provide our time, talent and donations,” said Jim Clough, president, Schwan’s Food Service, Inc. Feeding America supports several hunger-relief programs and services which focus on reaching children at the times they are most in need. • The BackPack Program provides children with nutritious and easy to prepare food for the weekends and school vacations. Backpacks filled with child-friendly, non-perishable and easily consumed foods are sent home with children in need. • The Kids Café Program provides nutritious meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of existing community locations where children congregate. These locations include Boys and Girls Clubs, churches and public schools. • The School Pantry Program provides food to low-income children and families on school grounds for them to prepare and consume at home. • In the summer months, Feeding America supports the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program. The close connection that Schwan’s Food Service has with more than 72,000 schools across the country will be meaningful in its efforts to increase awareness of and support for feeding the nation’s children better.

“There are fewer causes more important than providing good nutrition for our nation’s youth,” said Clough. “We strongly believe that there is a direct correlation between academic performance and good nutrition,” he continued. Feeding America’s research confirms this statement, reporting that child hunger results in poorer performance in school, as these children aren’t well prepared for the demands of the academic day and can’t concentrate as well. This summer, Schwan’s Food Service announced the expansion of its school foodservice portfolio by 50 percent, providing school foodservice directors more than 50 reformulated and new products that meet the newly proposed USDA School Meal Rules. “Our new LiveSmart Schools™ product portfolio is a direct result of our ongoing efforts to deliver great tasting food to students with the nutrition that they need,” said Clough. For more than ten years, the company has delivered solutions to schools with reduced sodium and fats and increased whole grains. Schwan’s Food Service will raise awareness and funding for Feeding America at the School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference in Nashville, July 10-13. Visitors to the company’s booth who visit all six food stations will have ten meals donated to Feeding America. In addition, a name will be drawn from business cards that visitors have left every 30 minutes, and Schwan’s Food Service will donate 1,000 meals in that respective school’s name to the community’s local food shelf. Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., a subsidiary of Minnesota-based The Schwan Food Company, offers value-added frozen foods to foodservice operators through more than 1,800 active distributors. Customers include chain restaurants, public and private schools, colleges and universities, healthcare facilities and convenience stores. The company markets leading brands such as Tony’s®, Freschetta® and Big Daddy’s ® pizza and Minh® Asian-style products.
