[email protected] According to Jesus, a tree is known by its fruit. Those who claim to be reborn by the Spirit of God should exhibit the fruit of kindness in their lives. We may be smart, beautiful, talented, capable, and many other things. God is more interested in whether or not we are kind to others. Those who follow Jesus’ example of kindness are powerful for God because the power of kindness is great. The power of kindness breaks down hostilities. There is certainly enough hatred and ill will in the world. Jesus taught us to show love and kindness to our enemies. Paul said that by showing kindness to our enemies, we will soften their hearts and cause them to change their attitudes toward us. Are there hostilities at home or at work? Try kindness and see what happens! The power of kindness brings souls to Jesus. The kindness of Jesus meant everything to the sinful woman who came to Jesus. He did not use her or abuse her or embarrass her. He had compassion on her and she found forgiveness. To Zachaeus, the dishonest enemy of his people, the kindness of Jesus was a breath of fresh air. Jesus’ kindness led him to repentance and salvation. Kindness shown to others by Christian people is like a magnet pulling people toward God. Resolve to show active kindness to those outside of Christ and watch the power of God work! The power of kindness builds trust relationships and strengthens our influence. The widow at Nain was indelibly impressed by the Savior who kindly said, “Don’t cry” and gave back her child. The hemophiliac woman never forgot the kindness and compassion of Jesus when she grabbed his clothes in the crowd. Even the children who found love in Jesus’ arms did not forget his kindness. The hungry multitudes were impressed by his kindness when he fed them at the end of a hard day. Don’t be hateful to people or ignore people. Show them genuine kindness and see how powerful your influence can be and how positive your relationships can be! Read Ephesians 4:32. —Dan R. Owen Broadway Church of Christ
