House Shopping? START HERE! REALTOR Small touches can make a big impact on your home’s interior design ®
(StatePoint) For homeowners looking to make a big interior design splash while staying on-trend, it’s all about focusing on little touches, say experts. “You may not think much about the knobs and handles on your kitchen and bathroom cabinets, credenzas and other furnishings, but these small touches can be the jewelry of your home and are an inexpensive yet important design remodel,” says acclaimed designer, Eric Cohler, who has been listed as a top international designer by House Beautiful and Elle Décor magazines. Want to update or coordinate the entire look and feel of your home? Cohler is offering some tips: • Think Metal: Metals are a hot trend — from artisanal coppers to sassy bronzes and from cool nickel to sharp stainless steel. While metallic finishes may already be peppered throughout your home on appliances, plumbing fixtures and even textiles, don’t forget that you can subtly follow the metal trend by including the look on cabinetry door pulls, furniture hardware and even hinges. It adds just the right amount of pol-
ish and elegance to a room without being too opulent. • Warmth: Copper, along with its chromatic cousins — brass, bronze and gold — brings a sense of warmth to the home. Pair it with natural wood, leather or glass to create a calm, elegant impression in any environment. Avoid mixing copper too much with primary colors. For example, if you’re looking for a warm and rustic surface with dark undertones, Cohler recommends considering knobs, handles and hinges with a Brushed Copper finish, available from such cabinet hardware brands as Amerock Hardware. A copper finish has the versatility to blend with both modern and traditional décor. • Layered Look: Combining a range of finishes can give you a layered effect, which is visually interesting. Avoid fittings that are identical or match everything in the room, says Cohler. • Cabinets: When it comes to decorative hardware for cabinets, a coordinated look is still the most popular among homeowners. For the more adventurous, try a modified mixing of hardware. For instance, you can
have all your wall cupboards fitted with brass and all the base cabinets and drawers with copper hardware. • Don’t get bored: Fashion conscious homeowners should consider keeping two sets of cabinet hardware on hand and change them every other year to keep the look fresh. Swapping them out is simple, and just requires a screwdriver. • Make it Easy: For many people, choosing cabinet hardware can be confusing and arbitrary. However, narrowing your search to a curated collection can make the process easier. For example, AmerockNOW curated by Cohler, captures regional style trends across the country, with refreshed styles and new finishes that blend with both traditionally styled interiors and more contemporary decors. More information about new products, as well as design tips and regional trends can be found at www.Amerock.com. From functional hinges and screws to decorative knobs and backplates, updating small details throughout your home is a great avenue for personal expression and trend-setting.
4 Question to ask neighbors before buying a home By: Patricia-Anne Tom Before purchasing a new home, it is important to nosy around the neighborhood. You must have questions to ask neighbors in the area before you decide if the house is right for you. Potential homebuyers don’t spend nearly enough time thoroughly examining the neighborhood by getting out of their cars and talking to the neighbors, says Andrew Schiller, founder and CEO of NeighborhoodScout. Yet you are unlikely to be happy if neighboring activities, schools and people don’t fit with your lifestyle—even if the potential home has the amenities of your dreams. As you walk the neighborhood, prepare yourself with a few questions to ask neighbors. You are certain to find out some useful information as you meet and greet potential new friends on the block. 1. Ask about the house Neighbors often have better insight into the history of the home and its surroundings than
your REALTOR®. A house can look great and pass all of the usual inspections, but some faults may not show up. Neighbors may know if the house you want to buy suffers from hidden problems. Did the previous owner put in a drain to address ponding problems? Neighbors might clue you into points that the seller “forgot” to mention, such as a wet basement. Alternatively, if all of the neighbors had tree roots damage their water pipes, you will know to get your home checked for similar problems. Learning more about the condition of the house and why the sellers are selling may put you in a better bargaining position when it comes to making an offer. 2. Find out about the neighborhood vibe Because you will be new to the neighborhood, ask about local amenities. Where is the best dry cleaner, dentist, hair stylist, etc.? Do they know of any house cleaners or dog walkers? Which is the friendliest church, mosque, synagogue? Where do people in the neighbor-
hood go for fun and to exercise? In addition to getting a feel for the available amenities, also ask about neighborly activities and whether people get along. Is there a neighborhood committee? Are there regular gatherings? Do neighbors share parking spaces, responsibilities or favors? Neighbors, for instance, might take turn trimming hedges and trees on the property line. While legal documents might dictate these shared responsibilities, you also may find out about handshake agreements and determine whether you want to continue with the favors. As you assess the neighbors, think about how long you hope to live in the home and whether you’ll be comfortable living next door for that long. A great neighbor can be wonderful, as neighbors often become good friends for life. However, an aggressive, noisy or uncooperative neighbor can make your life miserable. 3. Determine if the area is kid-friendly The neighborhood affects children, too. If you have kids, it’s important to ask about crime and safety, schools, as well as whether
there are plenty of things to keep them occupied. Neighbors can tell you whether there has been malfeasance or loitering at night, even if such activity doesn’t show up on police reports. In addition, while the home listing might note local schools, it’s important to verify with neighbors where school district lines lie. Consider what child-friendly activities exist, such whether there are reliable, local babysitters, good after school clubs, math tutors and summer day camps nearby. It’s important to ask yourself whether neighbors will have a positive influence on your children during their interactions— they’ll see them much of their lives. 4. Rate your experience Was your meeting with the neighborhood positive? Hopefully getting to know the neighbors was a pleasant event. You can confirm that the house really is for you and make a few lifelong friends in the process. Who knows? They might even invite you in for coffee and cake.
Garage sale success: How to clean out your junk and make a tidy profit A garage sale is a beautiful thing. You not only clear out stuff you consider junk, but recycle it and give it a second life for somebody else’s use. And you can make some significant coin while you’re at it. Pre-sale preparation Someone should be present to staff your sale at all times—preferably two people, to discourage shoplifters. (Some people come to garage sales to find out what’s worth burglar-
izing later.) Kids of any age can help with straightening items and bagging and toting purchases. You’ll need a stock of startup cash in various denominations for making change, but keep as little as possible at the sale site and keep it secured. Presentation is key The better shape things are in, the more likely they’ll sell. Check the condition of the merchandise in your for-sale pile: a minor repair or a few stitches can make the difference between a sale and a leftover. Determine prices for each item. Make them appealing, and allow room for dickering. Small self-stick labels or snippets of masking tape make dandy price tags. Remember, it’s called a garage sale for a reason: People are here for bargains, you’re trying to clear space, so price things to move! Similar to a retailer’s approach to merchandising, presentation cannot be underestimated at your sale. Make your wares appealing to shoppers, starting with these display tips: • Whether you use folding tables or lumber over sawhorses, allow room in between for browsers. • A clothesline works well for hanging clothes. • Display books so their titles are easily read. • If selling electrical appliances, be sure there’s an accessible power supply for testing.
