"f spent a little time at home because I was shot," said second baseman Enrique Wiison, who, Iike.Ieter and Ruben Sierra. waited until yesterday to clean out his locker. "I thought we were going to the World Series."

Jeter, the team captair, has played in six Worlci Series in the nine years he has been a Yankee, and, at 30, he has.the Iuxury of being able to wear four championship rings on one hand- In 2000 against the Mets, he helped the Yankees win their fourth championship in five seasons, and he was named the most vaiuable player of that Series.

But now, reminders of the Yankees' collapse are everywhere, on radio broadcasts and on late-night talk shows. They're inescapable: "Every channel you tum on, it's been there," said Jeter, who said he had spent the last couple of days at home.

2004 Wofld SeriesPreview Times columnist George Vecsey talks about the Boston Bed Sox' chances, and {ellow columnist William C. Rhoden discusses the St. Louis Cardinals'near perfect team.

'Wilson may be part of the changes. Now a free agent, he was overshadowed at second base by Miguel Cairo in the second half of the season- Wilson said the season was especially difficult for him because his left ankle bothered him lbng after he hurt it during spring training. He did not tell anybody about the pain, he siid, because he feared losing playing time- But his playing time dwindled as he struggled, and Cairo emerged-

"sitting on the bench during the Boston series, it was hard because in my mind I,m tryir,rg to help," wiison said- "But on the bench you can't help the team. Right now, I feel like if someone gave me the opportunity to play, I want to go somewhere else."

But do not expect Jeter to watch Game 1 or any other game. "I just don't really have much interest," he said. "I don't watch baseball when Im finishid-" Nearly 50 faris waited hours for Jeter yesterday, then gathered around him when he walked to the parking Iot to go home- For them and for Jeter, there's always next season - a sentiment usually associated with less accomplished franchises but one that is beginning to fit the Yankees.
