Makes announcements Collects homework Turns on overhead and says: “Take out your notebooks and open your book to page 140; we’ll go to the computer stations in a minute.” 1:18 “Folks, heads up to the overhead and focus on the chapter objectives.” “Go to the computer stations” and “wait for the software application to pop on the screen.” Begins stating the objectives for the chapter. Walks back to his desk and reminds students to “hurry and quietly.” Reminds students to review the learning objectives as they are moving to the back of the room.

Students pull out materials. Red shirt slapping boy next to him (blue shirt).

open to page 140. Start to move to the computer stations; Rick trips a student who yells, “Hey. . . ” Seven students do not have books.

1:25: “Read from pages 140 to 145.” Teacher sitting at desk getting software to boot up for a demonstration.

Students without books: 2 are talking with each other, 2 are sleeping, 3 are reading from nearby student’s books.

1:31: “Who would like to offer a summary while I see what the problem is with the server?” Asks Steve to give the summary.

4 students are still reading; 3 students (who did not have book) are talking with their neighbors; 4 students raise their hands.

In a loud and booming voice, “Stop the talking, now.”

There is quiet and students focus attention to the front of the room.

1:33: “OK, the program should be loaded. Click on the program and start entering data into the spreadsheet following the numbers in your book, page 140.”

Students quickly start entering data; 2 students raise their hands.

1:34: “There appears to be an error in the text; enter the number 56 in the third row, second cell.”

1:35: Teacher moving from computer station to computer station, answering questions and checking work.

Rick smacks Tony and Tony pushes Rick out of his seat.

1:37: Walks over to Rick and Tony: “Follow me.”

Students jeering—Mary (next to Rick) walks to the front of the room.

Pushes the call button and tells students to get back to their work— “Calm down, get back to your work. . .

Students quiet down and return to their work entering data.
