COST ENGINEER #ProjectControlSpecialist #CostAnalyst #CostEstimator #ProjectCoordinator Projects often run into the multimillions or multibillions of dollars, so your attention to detail and economics focus serve a key role. Your job is to provide cost estimates and ensure there are cost controls for facility construction, production and services. In short, you make sure the company you work for is either getting the best financial return for its service or product, or getting the biggest bang for the buck.
What does this career look like? Before embarking on a major project, you prepare cost estimates based on the project’s specifications and drawings. Your groundwork is critical for evaluating and responding to proposals you receive from contractors. Your initial cost estimates provide the basis for negotiations. During the initial project phase, your role looks more like cost control. You track expenditures meticulously using sophisticated databases. In the world of project management, you analyze S-curves to give you a sense of the cumulative costs of a project. Are you going over or under? If you are, it’s your job to create a cost mitigation plan and flag any issues to the project manager. Cost control is much like being the invoice police. You scrutinize contractor invoices. You check with engineers and project managers to make sure the job is done to quality and specifications before submitting invoices to the finance department.
