or creating awareness on the benefits of cloud computing for cost cutting and efficiency, FIEO (Southern Region) in association with Cluster Plus have planned a series of seminars in Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore. The second and third programmes of this series were held in Coimbatore on December 3 and in Bangalore on December 6, 2010. The Coimbatore programme was attended by more than 60 member exporters. The Technical Session was handled by Mr Mohammed Shahanawaz, Partner Engagement Manager, Microsoft Online Services, and Mr Bright Augustus, Business Productivity Consultant, Quadra Systems. Mr Unnikrishnan K., Director, FIEO (SR), welcomed the participants and briefed the participants on the advantages of going in for cloud computing. Some of the major points discussed during the technical presentation are given below: The primary benefit of cloud computing is reduced costs for everyone involved. Cloud computing will help MSMEs reduce their IT infrastructure costs and provide bet-

ter services to their customers. Since many MSMEs do not have the funds to set up any IT infrastructure at all, getting into cloud computing will help them perform better. Cloud computing is about IT implementation in an organization without investing in infrastructure, IT professional, training, software licenses etc. It brings together trends in both technology and IT operation as it is rapidly developing and generating lot of interest and discussion. Cloud computing is an industry transformation which enables unlimited possibilities for business of all sizes to deliver IT as a service, offering new possibilities to focus on business success at less operational cost and maintenance. The estimate market for cloud computing in India is $1 billion. Its penetration is poor currently. Although Indian businesses are definitely adopting cloud computing, it's still in the primary stage and hasn’t gone past the awareness phase. But this new computing phenomenon will hopefully grow at a faster pace in the coming years. A secure, reliable and scalable

IT infrastructure is the backbone of an organization. IT infrastructure and operations is one of the biggest cost centres within internal IT, but at the same time it also offers the greatest scope for helping an organization achieve business agility, as well as for cost reduction and efficiencies. IT infrastructure and operations account for 60% of total IT spending worldwide. With increasing pressure form businesses in terms of optimizing the costs, yet being flexible, reliable and scalable, it is imperative that organizations be able to cut the clutter, reduce complexity and adopt a utility model in terms of their IT infrastructure if they want to stay competitive in the market. Business today is faced with an exponential increase in the rate of change. IT systems need to be more flexible, scalable and responsive to meet the demands of today’s fast paced business environment. Organizations will find it increasingly difficult to cope with spikes in technology advancements. In many ways, outsourcing can be seen as the first wave, enabling business to focus on their core competencies. With availability of fast and reliable

connectivity, cloud computing is a natural evolution to a world where computing resources are available off the grid. Hence adopting cloud computing, an organization can get any type of legal software to support their needs, with enough space to store data which will be available anywhere, anytime. Mr Koteswara Rao, General Manager, Cluster Pulse, proposed the vote of thanks. In Bangalore, over 30 exporters, including service providers from Karnataka, attended the seminar. In this welcome address, Mr V. Srinivasan, Jt. Director, FIEO, briefed about the concept of the workshop and explained the various benefits of the programme to the participants. Mr J.V. Patil, Jt.DGFT, Bangalore, inaugurated the programme and in his address, explained that technology is helping entrepreneurs enhance their competitiveness. cause of online services. Mr Shibani Prasad Mohapatra, Senior Solution Specialist, Microsoft Online Services, gave a brief comparison of online services. Mr Harsh Kohli, Associate VP & Head of Manufacturing Material, Zensar Technologies, made a presentation on MS Hosted ERP solutions for SMEs. He made a presentation on how the SMEs can be benefited with the SAAS model and clarified

some of the doubts on low cost ERPs and open source solutions. Mr Bright Augustus, Business Productivity consultant, Quadra Systems, Chennai, made a detailed presentation on cloud computing, and how it helps their business. The programme ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr Koteswara Rao, General Manager, ■ Cluster Pulse.
