OPERATIONS AND PRODUCTION ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL #OperationsAccountant #ProductionAccountant #BusinessAnalyst #FinancialAnalyst You are a “numbers person.” Your philosophy? If knowledge is power, then the numbers are the power source. You’re the accountant and keeper of the data that companies require to make good decisions about planning or operating a facility or project. You skillfully verify and report on the quantities, costs and revenues from oil and gas activities involved in exploring, drilling and operating wells.
HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field - ideally in business, accounting, economics or petroleum technology - is typically required. An Energy Asset Management (EAM) two-year diploma is available from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), in partnership with the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS).
What does this career look like? With wells pumping and oil and gas flowing through pipelines, you know whether a well or a facility is performing adequately. As a Production Accountant, you observe, calculate, verify and report volumes, rates and royalties. You hold the numbers to answer the question: “What did we make this month?” As an Operations Accountant, you hold the answer of why and how. You get the data from all of the relevant sources and with it you do financial accounting, analysis, budgeting and projections.
Certification • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (legacy CA, CMA or CGA) • Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accounting (CAPPA) designation
You’re a big picture problem solver. You often work directly with those in charge, including those in the field, controllers or the chief financial officer (CFO).

What would I do? You capture numbers from a world of projects and if they don’t look right, you hunt down potential causes, such as costs, rate fluctuations or human error. Then you report it. You’re the hub through which numbers flow and decisions can be made. With knowing the numbers comes a solid grasp of the value of the business. Depending on your experience level, this could include:
4 Monitoring production costs, overhead rates and penalty payout interests
4 Interpreting complex accounting issues and unique transactions
4 Processing royalty payments
