Location/Situation The site is located approximately 2 km (1.25 miles) to the north of Junction 17 of the M4 motorway, just off the A429. It is located approximately 8 km (5 miles) to the north of Chippenham between Swindon and Bristol which are approximately 32 km ( 20 miles) and 48 km (30 miles) respectively. Malmesbury is approximately 8.8 km (5.5 miles) to the north. The site is situated to the north east of the main element of the former Hullavington airfield. MOD Buckley Barracks is located to the east with the village of Hullavington a short distance to the north. There is an estate of MOD housing (Wellington Place) adjacent to the northern element of the site.

The main site area is rectangular in shape and comprises the northern element of the former open grassed Hullavington airfield. It incorporates the northern end of the former secondary runway which crosses the former main runway in a north-west to south-east direction. There are two further areas known as Site B and Site E which are to the north-east and west of the main site area respectively. Each of these areas incorporate two ‘E’ type hangars.



The hangars were constructed between 1939 and 1942 and are of steel framed and reinforced concrete domed roof construction covered by earth/ vegetation (except hangar 181) and with concrete floors. The site area incorporates an element of the former airfield perimeter track together with vehicular and pedestrian access roads which serve the hangars. The site area extends to approximately 36 ha (89 acres). The 4 hangars range in size from approximately 4,603 sq m (49,547 sq ft) to 5,500 sq m (59,202 sq ft) GIA, extending to approximately 21,028 sq m (226,341 sq ft) GIA in total. Land Quality Assessment investigations have identified a small area of radiological contamination (Radium 226). The affected area is to be leased back to the MOD to enable remediation to be undertaken.

Services The MOD is to retain ownership of all infrastructure present on site, excluding all infrastructure present within the buildings. Detail on the availability and provision of services is included within the Sales and Technical Pack.

Town Planning The site falls within the Hullavington Airfield Conservation Area which covers the whole of the former airfield. The site falls under the Wiltshire Core Strategy Plan Document (adopted Jan 2015). The site is not allocated for alternative forms of development. There is a generic policy (CS37) for surplus MOD sites which supports conversion, change of use or redevelopment of redundant MOD buildings.
