Step Two

Pattern Instructions: Step 1:

Cut the Layer Cake (or 42 - 10” x 10” Squares) into 4 equal strips of fabric. Each strip will be 2 ½” x 10”. Place these in 4 piles.

Step 2: Take your Layer Cake strips and randomly sew them together, you will make a total of 84 of these. When pressing these I pressed my seams open. I like pressing my seams open when I can only because it creates less bulk. If you would rather press your seams to one side that’s fine. Step 3: Take 11 of the Bella Solid Layer Cake (10” x 10” squares), and cut 1” off. Size is now 9”x10”. Cut into 4 -2 ½” strips. Now cross-cut each strip in Step Three half, you will have 88 - 2 ½” X 4 ½” rectangles. Step 4: Sew the rectangles to one end of each of the step 2 pieces (total of 84), I pressed towards the blue.

Step Four

Step 5: Sew the strips together to create 6 columns by 14 rows.

Attaching borders is the last step but it the most important step in making your quilt. Your first step is to measure your quilt. Measure your quilt top (about 1/3” from the top), through the middle and the bottom of your quilt (again, about 1/3” from the bottom). Add these three numbers together (they will not be the same) and divide that by 3. This is how long your borders should be. Pin your borders to your quilt; find the center of both your quilt and your border then pin your border to your quilt at the center and the ends, ease any fullness by distributing it between these pins. Top and bottom borders are done the same. Each border will be added one at a time.
