Cut the background cotton fabric and light weight batting 9” x 9”. Trace the pattern design onto plastic or “Press and Seal” to create an overlay to accurately place the wool onto the cotton background. Using the pattern guide for correct positioning, trace the crow onto the cotton fabric. Pin the batting to the back of the cotton fabric. Embroider the crow onto the cotton (through the batting fabric) with black thread using an outline or back stitch. Cut 2 14” strips of cotton fabrics and 1 wool strip of wool. Braid them together. Using the guide, pin the braid to form the basket handle. Tack in place. Trim the excess braid. Using a mechanical pencil, trace the wool pattern pieces onto freezer paper. Cut out the freezer paper outside the template lines. Freezer paper is used to prevent the wool from moving when cutting it out. Press all the freezer paper templates to the right side of the wool, matching the pattern to the correct wool colors. Use the wool setting on your iron to apply the freezer paper. It will bond quickly. Cut the wool pieces out on the freezer paper cutting line. Remove the freezer paper. Pin the 1b piece onto the back of the wool zucchini and 2b on the back of the corn. Whip stitch around the outer edge. Whip stitch the yellow corn cob onto the green corn, the green pepper and the top over the eggplant. Position and pin the basket and vegetables on the fabric using the overlay as a guide. Use appliqué pins to place them onto the wool before sewing. Blanket stitch or whip stitch around the basket to secure it in place. Using a whip stitch sew the wool pieces onto the background in the numerical order of the vegetables. Start at the left and work towards the right. Don’t stitch the top of the zucchini and the corn above the handle. Use scraps of wool and thread to make the carrot tops. Tack in place. Trace the V design onto tissue paper and place onto the basket. Sew the V design with a variegated thread. Make simple stitches for the tomato top. Backstitch the ground line, carefully not making it too tight. Press your project. Trim the square to 8 ½” Place a border onto the square or add to other Wooly Adventure blocks to create a wall hanging. Designed and written by Connie Dilts, Magenta Rose Billings MT
