Learning INC. (Janet Mort PhD)
Traits of Writing©: A Complete K-5 Program with Dr. Ruth Culham Moderator: Dr. Janet Mort has created a powerful intervention system for primary grades. Instead of retiring she returned to university to determine how to help struggling young learners achieve literacy success. She systematically analyzed the prevailing Early Learning research; designed a strategy to apply the research in primary classrooms; and created an innovative assessment and tracking tool. Since then she has worked with over 100 teachers to apply the system in their classrooms. She has documented the research and her system in a new book – Joyful Literacy Interventions. The results have been outstanding: The goal was to begin applying the system in kindergarten with the goal of ensuring that vulnerable children reach grade level in literacy by the end of grade three. Hard data demonstrates that teachers are succeeding in achieving that goal in very vulnerable multiracial classrooms where success rates had been historically low. joyfulliteracy.com
Introducing Our Speakers: Ruth and Libby
R
uth Culham has been a member of the Joyful Literacy team for the past two years in Summits in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington and Oregon. She has been one of our most popular speakers and is known for her charm, sense of humour, and passion for ‘children as authors’ right from the “get-go”. Her 30-year work with the Traits covers grades kindergarten through grade 8; she is experienced at working with multi grade teams. When staff attends from the same school or district, the results can be outstanding with enhanced possibility of implementing district and school writing with cross-grade planning and annual writing plans. When I asked Ruth who she might choose as a speaking partner for the two day Summit, she didn’t hesitate: Libby! We invite you to join us for a two-day dynamic Summit. We are limited to 300 participants so we suggest you enroll your teams early. Sincerely, Janet N. Mort PhD | Owner, Early Learning Inc.
Join Us! A First-time Event for BC! Ruth’s materials will be on display and available for purchase. The program will include excerpts from her most well known work: • Writing is the New Black • The Writing Thief: Mentor Texts • Dream Makers: Mentor Texts • 6 + 1 Traits of Writing and • The Complete Guides (Primary Grades and Grades 3 and up)
Ruth Culham, has written over 40 books and bestselling resources illuminating both writing and the reading-writing connection for countless educators around the globe. Her groundbreaking work with the writing traits and writing from reading is the culmination of 40 years of research, practice, and passion. Along with new writing projects such as Traits Crates Plus (K-5), The Writing Thief and Dream Keepers: Mentor Texts That Celebrate Latino Culture, Ruth conducts professional development for schools and districts, and was the 2016 Department Editor for the professional journal Reading Teacher.
“…and the best part is that the traits will be there for them every day for the rest of their writing lives. The traits don’t change over time, but student’s abilities to work with them in more complex ways do.” (Culham & Coutu, 2009)
Libby Jachles As a former classroom teacher and recently retired Literacy Coach in the Brighton School District in Rochester, NY, Libby is Ruth’s righthand-trainer and source of inspiration. Currently, she specializes in training and coaching classroom teachers on teaching writing using the Writing Traits. Throughout the past 14 years, she’s presented to, and trained, teachers both nationally and internationally. She knows books, she knows kids, she knows teachers, and she likes to put her knowledge of all three together in her workshops and presentations. Alignment with the BC Curriculum Prior to offering this Summit we examined the alignment between the Ruth’s work with Writing Traits and the BC curriculum: The connections are sound. In fact “traits” are referenced numerous times throughout the BC Performance Standards (Writing). The BC curriculum makes a special effort to interpret connections between the Performance Standards and the Traits. For example, consider the following quote: Meaning in “Performance Standards”/Ideas in “Traits of Writing.” (www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/irp.htm, page 21).
