The Quest for Biblical Manhood

Session 13 A Definition of Manhood

For my part, I have no hesitation in saying that although the American Woman never leaves her domestic sphere, and is in some respects very dependent within in, nowhere does she enjoy a higher station. If anyone asks me what I think the chief cause of the extra-ordinary prosperity and growing power of this nation, I should answer that it is due to the superiority of their women.

- Alexis De Tockville, French Sociologist, mid 1800s

Sociologist Stephen Clark, from Yale University, specializes in gender issues, says, “The Feminst movement…devalues the thing that women most greatly desire to do – to be a wife and a mother. The effect of the Feminist movement has largely left women to feel the disadvantage of being female more acutely and so puts them under greater pressure to compete with men. The movement that is supposed to make women feel good about themselves actually encourages them to deny this basic instinct and to go out and pursue and compete with men. And most women feel a significant amount of frustration about that.

If you don’t believe that, listen to the feminist movement. Simone De Voyyer, one of the outspoken leaders of feminist movement, said, ‘No woman should be authorized to stay home and raise her children. Women should not even have a choice. Precisely because if they have such a choice, too many women will make it.’”

Small Group Discussion

1. What is your reaction to the core contributions of men and women... Women are the nurturers of life. Men are the bearers of destiny. 2. Discuss the differences in the two Adams. Do they fairly represent the choices a man has in a masculine identity? 3. How does this discussion on the first and second Adam help you in seeing your masculinity more clearly? Where are you like the first Adam? Where are you like the second?
