Pastor  Paul  on  Marriage   1  Corinthians  7:1-­‐9   April  19,  2015   Dr.  Mark  Strauss  

    Theme: After dealing with a number of problems at Corinth, Paul now turns to answer questions from the church. A number of these questions relate to marriage, singleness, and divorce. While Paul celebrates singleness as a good thing, he also recognizes that marriage is a gift from God. He encourages the Corinthians to fulfill their marital responsibilities to one another.

Outline 1. The Corinthian Slogan: It is good to remain celibate (7:1)

2. Paul’s Response (7:2) a. Singleness is good

b. But marriage is good as well

3. Responsibilities in Marriage (7:3–4) a. The wife to the husband, v. 4a

b. The husband to the wife, v. 4b

c. The exception: mutual and temporary abstinence for spiritual reasons, vv. 5-6

4. To Marry or Not To Marry? (7:7–9) a. Paul’s preference: singleness, vv. 1, 7, 8, 27, 32-34)

b. The goodness of marriage, v. 9

Takeaway: Both singleness and marriage are gifts from God to be celebrated and practiced for the good of others and to the glory of God.
