First Quarter 2018
From Dick Bundy - AFA Vice Chairman for Aerospace Education After a very successful Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando, we are into awards season. Please see the articles in this newsletter regarding upcoming awards and deadlines. Before the next newsletter is published, we will have concluded several major aerospace education programs, the Teacher of the Year, CyberPatriot, StellarXplorers, and a number of grants and scholarships programs. This is one of the busiest times of the year for AFA; please don’t miss out because you weren’t on top of the deadlines. I am looking forward to attending the Arnold Air Society/Silver Wings National Conclave in New Orleans the weekend of the 30th of March - 2 April. It is gratifying to see the enthusiasm and leadership that are on display at this event. As we end awards season and enter summer, the next competition cycle for CyberPatriot and StellarXplorers is getting started. The deadlines for registration will soon be upon us. Please encourage the schools in your area to participate and seek mentors from your membership. Have a great spring! Dick Bundy Vice Chairman, Aerospace Education

Arnold Air Society/Silver Wings
Arnold Air Society (AAS)/Silver Wings (SW) are preparing for the upcoming National Conclave (NATCON) to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from 30 Mar to 2 Apr 18 at the Marriott French Quarter. The slate of speakers is at https://www.aas-sw.org. The AAS/SW recognize outstanding squadrons and individuals; see those recently recognized in the pictures and summaries here. Bernie V. Guthrie Squadron South Dakota State University The Guthrie Squadron has performed in an extraordinary manner in order to uphold the professional, honorary, and service aspects that embody AAS. In one month they completed a total of 182 hours dedicated to furthering the three basic aspects that make up AAS. They started a monthly service project spending time with local veterans in a retirement home. The Guthrie Squadron successfully coordinated and spearheaded a 24-hour vigil to honor our nation’s veterans. Their cadets kept watch over the Brookings Veterans Memorial in below freezing temperatures doing 30-minute shift rotations starting at 1100 on 10 Nov 17 and ending on 11 Nov 17. The cadets generated community recognition of veterans’ sacrifice, coordinated a flyover with two T-6 Titans, worked with local newspapers and businesses, involved SW in their ceremonies, involved Army ROTC cadets in marching/tent festivities, and organized a speaker who addressed the attendees regarding the sacrifice of veterans and their families. The Bernie V. Guthrie Squadron has also gone to great length to implement effective fundraising by working with local businesses, raising over $1500. The Guthrie Squadron has demonstrated great leadership and team work!

WOMEN IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (WISE) By Susan A. Romano, AFTAC Public Affairs / Published February 14, 2018 PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- For the fourth time in as many years, the Air Force Technical Applications Center hosted its annual Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Symposium Feb. 7-8, with Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson as the featured keynote speaker. The symposium was established in 2013 to bring attention to and highlight the value that gender diversity brings to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce. It also focuses on encouraging mentorship and networking opportunities for those interested in pursuing and excelling in STEM careers. “The idea of the conference is to bring the brightest women who have achieved enormous success together with young minds interested in STEM,” said Col. Steven M. Gorski, AFTAC commander. “We invite the best speakers from various industries – academia, defense, corporate, and commercial – to share best practices in promoting STEM, resources available to both employers and potential candidates, and most important to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.” During her presentation, Wilson touched on many of those concepts Gorski listed, with a heavy emphasis on the importance of adding proverbial tools to your tool box. “We all must find what we’re passionate about,” Wilson explained, “and once you find your passion, whatever you’re doing really doesn’t feel like work. Continue to develop your skills, surround yourself with smart, enthusiastic people, and seek out opportunities to find better ways to do business. Keep adding those tools to your tool box, and one day you’ll put them to good use. You may not realize it at the time, but ultimately you’ll be glad you did.” Other keynote speakers included Gen. (ret.) Janet Wolfenbarger, first Air Force female 4-star general; Lt. Gen. Stayce Harris, first Air Force African American female 3-star general; and Lt. Gen. Veralinn “Dash” Jamieson, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. Harris, the current Inspector General of the Air Force, discussed the need for senior leaders to “develop our STEM successors” and gave tips on how to recruit the next generation of STEM professionals. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet Mae Krier, one of the original “Rosie the Riveters,” who conducted a break-out session to discuss her experiences constructing B-17s and B-29s during World War II. Wolfenbarger praised Krier and other women in the service whose footsteps the general has followed. For the first time, AFTAC invited students from various Brevard County schools to showcase their winning Science Fair projects. The program has grown from 14 speakers and panelists in 2014 to 25 in 2018. For more information about this year’s event, including speaker biographies, break out session topics, photos of past presenters, and the symposium agenda, visit www.wiseusaf.com. The AFA participated in this symposium by having a CyberPatriot information table for all attendees. In addition, both CyberPatriot and StellarXplorers program presentations were included in the CAP and AFA STEM Programs session.
