Welcome to Fish Strand Quay In the early nineteenth century Falmouth became the first Cornish town to be lit by gas. James Wynn, owner of the Royal Hotel (now the HSBC Bank) with stabling for 30 horses had been making gas privately behind his hotel and decided to build the Falmouth Gas Works on the site of the present car park and supply gas One visitor in 1823 described Fish Strand as a commercially for the whole town. Schooners "disgusting public nuisance." Records show by brought cargoes of coal to the gas works. 1851 there were 300 fishing boats registered in Falmouth. The Borough Council banned the display of fish at the market during 1849 due to an outbreak of cholera. Her commanding officer Lt Lapenotiere landed here. Within two hours the young naval officer departed from the port in a hired post-chaise coach bound for London with the grave news.

Fish Strand derives its name from the beach or ‘strand’ part of which is still visible today at low tide. A short pier was built in 1790, with an extension added in 1871. Fishermen landed their catches here from a wooden platform located outside The Watermans pub, with the fish being sold at the market.
