Little Giants Return to Conference Play at Oberlin Crawfordsville, IN – Wabash College (5-0. 2-0 NCAC) returns to the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its 2011 football schedule when the Little Giants travel to Ohio on Saturday to face Oberlin College (2-3, 1-1 NCAC). Kickoff at Savage Stadium (3,500; natural grass) is set for 1 p.m.
Wabash is tied for first place in the latest NCAC football standings, along with Wittenberg University (5-1, 3-0 NCAC) and Denison University (3-3, 2-0 NCAC). The Yeomen are tied with Allegheny College (3-3, 1-1 NCAC) for fourth place just past the halfway point in the 2011 season. The Little Giants enter the week as the top-rated scoring defense in Division III. Wabash has held opposing teams to an average of 4.8 points a contest and has not surrendered a touchdown in the last eight quarters of play.
Series Record: Wabash owns a 13-1-1 advantage in the all-time
series against the Yeomen, dating back to a 32-7 loss to Oberlin in the first meeting between the two schools in 1945. The Little Giants tied Oberlin 7-7 in 1947 before running off a string of 13 consecutive victories. Wabash is 11-0 in NCAC games against the Yeomen since 2000 and are 6-1 on the road overall. The Little Giants defeated Oberlin 42-21 last year in Crawfordsville and won 41-9 in their last trip to Oberlin in 2009. Last year, coming off a four-point loss at Washington University-St. Louis, Wabash picked off two Oberlin passes, sacked the Yeoman quarterback three times, caused numerous hurry ups that resulted in incomplete throws, and scored its first safety of the season for the 21-point victory. Offensively, Wabash rolled up 494 total yards to Oberlin’s 250. The Little Giants had 192 yards rushing to the Yeoman’s 129.
Coaches: Erik Raeburn (Mount Union, 1994) is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Little Giants with a record of 32-6. He came to Wabash after spending eight seasons at Coe College in Iowa, giving him an overall coaching record of 89-32 in his 12th season as a head coach. Raeburn was an assistant coach at Mount Union College from 1994-1999. Raeburn is 3-0 versus Oberlin since coming to Wabash.
Jeff Ramsey (University of California-Davis, 1983) is 34-91 in his 13th season as the head football coach at Oberlin. He is the fifth-winningest coach in Yeomen football history. Ramsey is 0-11 versus Wabash in his career.
Rankings: Wabash remains 12th for the second consecutive week in
the latest D3football.com poll. The Little Giants received 328 total points — an increase of 30 points — from the panel of 25 Division III coaches, sports information directors, and media members from around the country. Wabash also remained 13th for the second week in a row in the latest American Football Coaches Association. The Little Giants received a total of 504 points from the organization’s 40 voting members.

Meet Ian MacDougall
Sport: Football Position: Kicker Year: Sophomore Major: History and French Hometown: Westfield, IN High School: Westfield Parents: Jennifer MacDougall, Rob MacDougall Living Unit: Martindale Hall Career Plans: Undecided Ian MacDougall Wabash Highlights: Two-for-two this season in field goal attempts, including a career-long 41-yard kick last week for the first score of the game against Washington UniversitySt. Louis... Is in his first season as a member of the football team after playing soccer as a freshman. MacDougall was the starting goalkeeper in 14 of 18 matches last year with 64 saves and a record of 6-9-0.
Last Week: Wabash defeated Washington University-St. Louis 24-3. The Bears were the only non-conference team to defeat Wabash last season. Ian MacDougall (SO/K/Westfield, IN/Westfield) put the Little Giants on the board in the first quarter with a career-best 41-yard field goal. Wes Chamblee brought the crowd to its feet at the end of the opening period with a spectacular 67-yard punt return for a touchdown — his second punt return for score this season — to make it a 10-0 game. Jonathan Horn (SR/WR/Carmel, IN/Cathedral) added an 18-yard TD catch on a pass from Chase Belton (JR/QB/Dayton, OH/Northmont) in the third quarter. Belton scored the final touchdown on a one-yard keeper.
CJ Gum (SR/LB/North Judson, IN/North Judson) returned to the lineup after a two-week absence because of a knee injury to pace the Wabash defense with 13 tackles. Jorge Diaz-Aguilar (SO/DL/ South Bend, IN/St. Joseph’s) recorded seven tackles, two sacks, a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry. Houston Hodges (FR/DB/ Plymouth, IN/Plymouth) and Denzel Wilkins (FR/DB/Richton Park, IL/Homewood-Flossmor) each had fumble recoveries.
Gum Receives Weekly Conference Award
CJ Gum was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Little Giants’ 24-3 win over Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday.
Gum returned to action for the first time in two weeks after suffering a knee injury and led the Wabash defense with 13 total tackles. He recorded seven solo tackles along with six assisted tackles. Gum also had a team-high 3-1/2 tackles for losses totaling 14 yards to help Wabash hold the Bears to 59 total rushing yards and 249 yards of total offense. The Little Giant defense also kept Washington University from scoring on two of the Bears’ three trips to the red zone, and held them to only a field goal on the only opportunity in which they did score.
Topping The Charts
Wabash enters the week leading all 239 Division III football teams in scoring defense (4.80 points per game) and punt return yardages (24.65 yards per punt return). The Little Giants have not allowed a touchdown in eight quarters and have held opposing teams to three scores of any kind in 11 trips to the red zone. Saturday Washington University scored on a 33-yard field goal, while the University of Chicago and the College of Wooster each scored touchdowns. Wabash is outscoring teams 105-17 in the first two quarters of games to this point in the season. The Little Giants defense is also ranked first in Red Zone defense. Opposing teams have score three times — two TDs and one field goal — in 11 trips for 27-percent. Hobart is second in the nation at 43 percent (3-of-7).
Oberlin College Quick Facts
Coach Raeburn’s Comments
On last week’s win over Washington University. “We played another outstanding game on defense Saturday against Washington University. We gave up a couple of big plays that we would like to clean up, but all-in-all it was an outstanding effort. Their offense is predicated on the running game setting up the play-action pass. We held them to 59 rushing yards and that was the key. ” On the kicking game: “Ian MacDougall had struggled on extra points earlier this season, but he’s really coming on strong now. A 41-yard field goal is never automatic, and he drilled that kick against Washington University Saturday. His kickoffs were fantastic, as well. That’s huge in terms of field position.”
On Oberlin: “Coach Ramsey does an outstanding job getting his team prepared. They are playing excellent defense. Oberlin leads the conference in passing defense and are third in passing defense. They are really very disciplined and don’t give up any big plays. Oberlin really makes you earn every yard all the way down the field. If we don’t run the football well it will be a tough day for us because their pass defense is so good. Offensively I’ve been very impressed with their system. They have great balance between their running and passing games. Their quarterback is very accurate. They have the best tight end we will have played to this point in the season. He’s a big, tall guy who runs great routes and is a huge target in the passing game. Overall they just do a great job getting themselves into third-and-short or third-andmedium offensive situations.”
Oberlin Preview
The Yeomen picked up a convincing 42-0 win over Kenyon to open the 2011 season, but have dropped two straight games since a 27-7 win over Hiram. Oberlin lost to Wooster (14-3) prior to the win over Hiram, then dropped back-to-back games at Wittenberg (41-19) and at Case Western Reserve (47-21).
Despite the 2-3 record, the Yeomen’s pass defense has been solid. Oberlin leads the North Coast Athletic Conference in pass defense, holding opposing teams to 171.4 yards per game and has recorded 25 quarterback sacks. Senior linebacker Derrick Dennis (5-10/204/ Detroit, MI/Renaissance) has 4 tackles, six tackles for losses, and three sacks to lead the Yeomen in all three categories. Oberlin also has five interceptions through five games, with Zachary Kisley (SO/ DB/6-2/210/Libertyville, IL/Vernon Hills) pacing the team with two picks.
Josh Mandel (JR/5-11/206/Plantation, FL/University School) missed one start at quarterback due to an injury, but has completed 63 percent of his passes (72-114-9) for 763 yards and eight TDs. Joe Cook (JR/6-3/225/Greenwich, OH/River View) has also seen action at quarterback, throwing for 102 yards on 10-of-18 passing with one interception. Wide receiver Robin Witjes (JR/5-11/185/Howell, MI/Howell) has been a key utility player for the Yeomen all season. He tops the receiving list for Oberlin with 22 catches for 258 yards and four touchdowns. He has also played quarterback when Mandel went down with an injury, completing 4-of-5 passing attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown. Witjes also has nine rushes for 73 yards. Moses Richardson (SO/RB/5-9/185/Cridersville, OH/Wapakoneta) is the leading rusher for the Yeomen with 70 carries for 320 yards and two scores, but is not listed on the Yeomen’s depth chart heading into the game against Wabash. Justin Williams (FR/RB/5-9/185/ Wesford, PA/Pine-Richland) has 161 yards on 36 rushes with two TDs.

Legendary Olympic Coaches to Speak at Wabash
Four former Olympic coaches and legends in the sports of track and field and cross country will speak at a Distance Running Symposium at Wabash College to be held Sunday, October 16 from 7-9 p.m.
Joe Vigil, Joe Newton, Stan Huntsman ’54, and Robert H. Johnson H’77 will speak on subjects involving motivation, the Olympic experience as a head coach, and global running.
Vigil was a two-time US Olympic team coach and earned National Coach of the Year honors 14 times. His Adams State University have claimed 19 national team championships, including the 1995 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship with a perfect score of 15 points. He has coached 425 All-Americans and 87 national champions. He worked with Deena Kastor, the bronze-medal winner in the marathon at the 2004 Olympics. Newton served as the US Olympic coach in 1988, the only high school coach to serve on the US Olympic coaching staff. His York High School team has won 27 Illinois state cross country titles, earning him National Cross Country Coach of the Year honors.
Huntsman, a 1954 Wabash College graduate, was the head coach of the 1988 US Olympic team. His Ohio University, University of Tennessee, and University of Texas teams have won 46 conference and two team national championships. Huntsman has coached 41 NCAA individual national champions. He has earned National Coach of the Year honors six different times.
Johnson, the recently retired head cross country and track and field coach at Wabash College and an honorary alumnus of the College from the class of 1977, served as a coach on the 2000 US Olympic team — the only Division III coach to serve as an Olympic coach. He led the Wabash cross country team to three top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division III National Championship meet and was named the NCAA Division III Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1995. The event will take place at the Robert H. Johnson Indoor Track in the Knowling Fieldhouse. The event is free to all Wabash College students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Students, faculty, and staff will be admitted by showing their Wabash College ID. Tickets for the general public are $20 and can be purchased in advance by contacting Wabash College cross country coach Roger Busch by email (
