The Rebels ■ Cindy Pitts Staff Writer After losing 25 players to graduation, Mid-Carolina High has almost 80 student athletes ready to step up. “We feel good about the group we have,” says Head Football Coach Louie Alexander, adding many of the members of his team do not have a lot of game experience. GO TEAM — The Mid-Carolina cheerleaders practice their moves as they cheer on the team.

This year’s Newberry High football team could rival that of the 2006 AA Upper State championship team. Head coach Sam Baird says he has a good makeup of players going into the season. He adds the players are good workers and fun to be around. The coach says with the good mix of players, he believes if the team plays well and avoids injury it will do well.

But injury has already started to plague the Bulldogs. Last year’s quarterback Lance Brehmer was injured during the preseason when his finger was caught between two helmets. With Brehmer out of the offense and on the defensive side of the ball, junior Tyler Bishop and sophomore Brandon Ahrens will be the two candidates for the job. Kevis Worthy hurt his ankle last year and is not able to get into a kneeling stance, but the Bulldog coaches are not going to

waste his athletic ability. The coaches have moved Worthy to the wing position where he can play without getting down into a low stance. “He is too good to be on the sidelines,” said Baird. Also at wing will be Kenny Bates, Quentin Ray and Rufus Swittenburg. The halfbacks will be composed of seniors Montagus Caldwell, Marcus McMorris and Nick Gallman. Kadeem Counts and sophomore Tyrone Neal will see time at fullback. Baird says Neal has had problems holding on to the

“couple” players that he will be rotating into play on Friday nights and around 77 youth on the varsity and junior varsity teams. Again this year, Krishawn Holley and Clarence Turner will be returning for the Rebels. Zak Linowski will be the center for the Rebels with three good quarterbacks Jonathan Davenport, Kendall Lathrop and Holley ready for action. However, Alexander said if he had to choose today, that Jonathan Davenport would be the starting thrower for the Rebels. Kane Summer will also see a good bit of action.

ball but will be working on that this week. Neal will also be the punt returner and on the defensive line for the Bulldogs. Baird says he hopes none of the backs or wings get hurt, because most play both sides of the ball. The offensive line last year was made up of many sophomores, who are back. However, one loss will be Larry Sligh, who will be attending the Governor’s School. But coming back are Ryan Bowers and nose tackle Kevin Sims. Jeff Kiser has

gained weight over the summer and has been moved to tight end. Jamarcus Glenn is the biggest player on the line at 6’4” and 327 pounds. Tackle Chris Cleveland will be blocking with his 6’4” and 224 frame, and according to Baird, is becoming a better player. Brandarius

The Wolverines ■ Brian Whitmire The Union Daily Times The Wolverines will need to rely on a good group of seniors to find success in a tough schedule. “Right now we have a long ways to go,“ said coach Donald Addis. “We have a lot of work to do.“ A tough first scrimmage with Indian Land exposed a lot of weaknesses. ready for Ninety-Six on Friday. “We have a good group of seniors and hope they provide leadership,“ said Addis. “We’ll need to lean on them to get through the early part of the schedule.“ Inexperience at key positions and little depth are weaknesses that the Wolverines must work to overcome. They’ve got talent among the 30 players on the varsity roster, but must work on conditioning as most players will be on the field the entire game. The team participated in passing leagues at Union and FCA camp over the summer and was hard at work in the weight room. ■ See WCS, page 17

college Newberry College With yet another tough schedule and a solid mix of youth and experience, Head Coach Todd Knight expects good things from the 2009 squad. “I expect our seasoned group to perform well every Saturday, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t,” Knight said. “They’ve all been in big ball games and they know what’s expected of them. There hasn’t been as much change as some people out there might think, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t perform at a very high level.”

Quarterback For the first time since Josh Stepp’s tenure entering the 2006 playoff season, Newberry has its starter at quarterback entering camp. Preseason All-SAC second teamer and offensive captain Brandon Gantt (Lexington) will enter the 2009 season as the starting signal caller in his final season wearing the scarlet and gray. The senior played in seven of 10 games last season, completing 42 of his 72 passes for 452 yards and two touchdowns. He is on the passing end of

The Scarlet and Gray a Newberry record, as he connected with Kelton Tindal for a school-record 94-yard touchdown in the 2008 Homecoming win over Catawba. In 2007, Gantt was the only quarterback on the roster to play in all 11 games, completing 92-of-144 passes for 940 yards and five touchdowns. He is a dual threat, having carried the ball 105 times for 481 yards and three touchdowns in his two years at Newberry. “Having our starter at quarterback named before the season starts brings new stability to the offense that we haven’t

Redshirt freshmen Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) and Taniel Massey (Lancaster) are leading candidates, having spent the most time in the system under offensive coordinator and quarterbacks ■ See NC, page 16

■ nc Continued from page 14 coach Todd Varn. “Bryan is a great young dynamic player, and Taniel is a multi-faceted athlete who could probably start for us at three or four positions,” Knight said.

Running Back A wealth of talent returns at the running back position, including a preseason all-SAC member and another all-SAC candidate. Gerald Legree (St. Helena Island) earned recognition as a preseason second team allSAC honoree after a solid junior campaign in 2008. He carried the ball 94 times for 480 yards and three touchdowns, playing 10 games. But by Aug. 29 in Valdosta, it could be Tharry Salley (Blackville) starting. He also would have been an all-SAC candidate had he not missed the final three games of the season due to an injury. Salley had 94 carries for 485 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore. Also expected to contribute are Lyndon Ingram (Sumter) and Alkeem Sherman (Conway), who earned the majority of the snaps in the 2009 spring game.

Fullback and Tight End After losing both fullbacks from the 2008 season, Newberry receives a huge boost at that position as S.J. Worrell (Madison, Ga.) transfers in from Presbyterian College. Worrell was the leading rusher for the Blue Hose in each of the last three seasons. Worrell amassed 2,632 yards rushing and receiving with 20 touchdowns on 502 touches in his three years at PC, and that talent will be greatly appreciated by the Newberry squad. Joining him at the fullback spot is Rod Nabors (Augusta, Ga.). Two tight ends return for the scarlet and gray and a newcomer with experience at the fullback position will be one of Newberry’s best at that

position in the last few years. Senior Justin Greene (Irmo) returns at tight end, as does junior Connor Hilton (Hickory, N.C.).

Wide Receiver The wide receiver position might be Newberry’s most exciting to watch, as the school returns a pair of allSAC players. The receiver getting the most attention from professional scouts and publications will be speedy senior Kelton Tindal (Sumter). Tindal led Newberry last season with 39 catches for 745 yards—the seventh best season in NC history—and six touchdowns. He sits on sixth place in Newberry history in career receiving yards with 1,461 and could be considered a candidate for Newberry’s first 1,000-yard season. Tindal was named to the Orangeburg Touchdown Club’s All-State team and was named all-Super Region Two Second Team by DAKTRONICS and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette in 2008. With his 4.2 time in the 40-yard dash and excellent route running and ball catching ability, Tindal is one of the top all-star candidates for the scarlet and gray this season. Knight says, “He’s definitely a go-to guy in all situations on both offense and special teams.” Where there is wealth at the receiver position, it abounds. David Pressley (Anderson) had a breakout sophomore season after redshirting in 2007, catching 32 passes for 427 yards and four touchdowns. He had many highlight moments, including the game-winning touchdown in overtime against CarsonNewman and a 141-yard game against Tusculum. Also returning is senior David Brown (Goose Creek), who caught 28 balls for 295 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore Brandon Bostick (Florence) who caught 20 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Another potential starter coming off of an injury is David Smith (Union) who

caught 16 passes for 153 yards before getting hurt.

Offensive Line The front line has been one of Newberry’s strengths throughout the program’s history, and despite considerable losses, the “Roach Patrol” once again aims to be one of the top lines in Division II. Junior center Matt Holmes (Johnston) is the leader of this year’s Roach Patrol, and is a Preseason First Team All-SAC honoree after earning second team honors in 2008. Junior right guard Walter Simmons (Charleston) joins Holmes on the preseason allconference list, earning second team recognition after battling injury the last two years. Also returning is Kenny Heath (Aiken), who split starting time with Simmons in 2008. “Those guys are the anchors of that unit,” Knight said. Youth is the buzzword surrounding the Roach Patrol though, as many sophomores and redshirt freshmen are expected to make large contributions on the line. Andrew Tucker (Summerville), Ben Inabinet (Irmo), Chase Gamble (Dallas, N.C.) and Tyler Belue (Gaffney) will all see significant playing time on the line. “Ben and Chase are great athletes and they’re fighters as well,” Knight said. “I love their attitude, and they have already begun to develop into great leaders for our younger guys on that unit.”

Defensive Line The defensive line will display a mix of youth and experience, with two all-SAC performers returning, as well as a number of other key contributors. Leading the way is preseason first team all-SAC member Lance Clark (Florence), who made 28 tackles in his sophomore season, including six tackles for loss, which tied him for second on the team. Also returning for his senior season is preseason second team all-SAC honoree Marcus Nelums (Columbia), who

made 23 tackles as a junior, including 3.5 tackles for loss and two solo sacks. Junior Andre Clark (Rock Hill) returns after making 21 tackles and recording a sack as a sophomore, while sophomore Derrell Kinard (Boiling Springs) comes back after making 18 tackles, recording two sacks and returning an interception for a touchdown as a redshirt freshman. Others expected to contribute include senior James McLamore (Irmo) and sophomores Arsenio Smoot (Newberry) and Joshua Stinson (Chester).

Linebacker The only major changes in Newberry’s depth chart come at the linebacker position. Of the top eight linebackers from 2008, only Josh Williams (Duncan), who made five tackles in ‘08, returns. The graduating linebackers accounted for 326 of the 780 tackles made last season. With so many spots to fill, two stars move from other positions to the outside linebacker position, serving as hybrid players combined with their other position. Senior defensive captain Andre Moyd (Andrews) has served primarily as a cornerback in his previous three seasons and his speed will be an asset at outside linebacker. He has 56 career tackles, forced and recovered two fumbles in 2008 and has made five career interceptions. Moving from safety to outside linebacker is junior R.J. Reeder (Spartanburg). One of the hardest hitters on the team, Reeder is the leading returning tackler after making 44 hits and forcing a fumble in 2008. “When we moved Andre and R.J. to outside linebacker halfway through the spring, all of the pieces of the puzzle fell into place on defense,” Knight said. “Because they’ve been in our defense for a number of years, they can do whatever you need done without having to change the personnel.” Newcomers who will be counted on at the inside linebacker positions include Brian Yarborough (Columbia), Apollo Stretch (Columbia),

Jonathan Stone (Easley) and Matthew Kingdom (Summerville). “While our inside linebackers are inexperienced, they’re probably bigger, stronger and more athletic than any starting pair we’ve had at that position in a very long time,” Knight said.

Cornerback Plenty of experienced talent at the cornerback position provide defensive play-making ability, even with the Moyd moving to linebacker. Junior all-region and first team all-SAC honoree Kamaal McIlwain (Fort Mill) is sure to wow fans again with his speed. He made 29 tackles, defended 11 passes, recovered two fumbles, made three interceptions and blocked two kicks as a sophomore. “Kamaal is a phenomenal athlete with a great combination of speed and strength,” Knight said. “He is absolutely a playmaker, and I don’t think there is a harder worker than him.” Senior Antonio Patton (Woodruff) will return to a starting role and can be counted on for solid coverage on the edge. Joining McIlwain and Patton to compete for playing time in camp are James Bostick (Scotia), Kendall Glenn (Duncan), Brandon Harris (Kershaw) and Louisburg CC transfer Dej’Jon Lee (Lake City).

shaw) will handle PATs and field goals, while senior Todd Moon (Anderson) will take care of kickoffs and punting. Blackmon earned SAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors once in 2008 and was second in the league in field goals made. Moon was second in the conference in punting average and ranked in the top 50 nationally. “We’re confident about both the kicking and punting duties because of the character these men have displayed,” Knight said. The long snapping and holding duties are up for grabs in camp. Others expected to push for time in the kicking department include Nick Kinney (Goose Creek), Joseph Morris (Lancaster) and Nick Toole (Barnwell).

Return Game The return game should once again be a strong point in Newberry’s game with a plethora of speedy specialists. Gerald Legree, Kamaal McIlwain, Andre Moyd, Antonio Patton and Kelton Tindal will all be expected to return kicks and punts in 2009. “We’re so lucky to have that much talent and speed in the return game,” Knight said. “A lot of kids these days don’t want to return kicks, they just want to star at their position. All of these young men are putting this program first and that will make us immensely better as a team.”

Safety

2009 Schedule

The graduation of AllAmerican Derrell Mills and the move to linebacker by R.J. Reeder puts one of the team’s hardest hitters in line to start at safety despite only being a sophomore. Ron Parker (St. Helena Island) made 36 tackles as a redshirt freshman, and is the second leading returning tackler. An impressive 28 tackles were solos. Brooks Burnette (Bonneau) and Harry Cabaniss (Greenville) are expected to compete for playing time in camp.

The 2009 schedule will be tough once again as Newberry opens up in Titletown USA against Valdosta State, marking the first time Newberry has opened the season on the road since 2003. After a game at Division I FCS opponent Austin Peay, the home opener is against NAIA opponent Cumberland (Tenn.) on Sept. 19. The SAC schedule starts with two consecutive road games at Carson-Newman and Catawba. “I think we have an ambitious schedule, but I think our kids are excited about it,” Knight said. “The expectation level in our program has been very high the past few years, and we haven’t backed down our schedule because of that.”

The veterans will be backed up by younger players, who could also see playing time with the junior varsity team on Thursdays. At split end, the fans will see Kerry Worthy, Cordell Corley, Josh Sheen, Matt Smith and Will Senn, who moved from the kicking position. Backup will come from Daniel Nicholson and Scott Hill. McMorris is a four-year starter as linebacker and will get help from Brehmer, L.L. Suber and freshman Vince Cameron. The defensive line will be made up of Sims, James Tribble, Neal and sophomores Devonte Brooks and DJ Johnson will bring their speed. The kicking game should be strong with Chad Davis as punter. Davis could also see time as the quarter back for the JV team if Ahrens starts on the varsity team. Davis is also the first lefty Bulldog kicker. Joseph Foster will be kicking extra points and field goals and Aaron Ransdell

Baird is hoping Ransdell, who never played football until a couple weeks ago, will use his soccer skills to land the kickoffs in the end zone. If the three kickers have bad luck, Senn and Brehmer could be called into duty. The Bulldogs will kickoff the year with rival Clinton on Aug. 28.

“Clinton is a good measuring stick and we will start out with a good test,” said Baird, adding the Bulldogs will learn how good they are when they go up against the Red Devils. The Bulldogs will then have a three-game home spell with Broome, Fairfield Central and Chapin. They will play at Ninety Six, who is said to be an

improved team, on Sept. 25 and Saluda, who has a new coach from Strom Thurmond on Oct. 2 They will then travel up Highway 391 to BatesburgLeesville and over to Strom Thurmond, who is predicted to be the region leader, on Oct. 23. They will then face incounty rival Mid-Carolina at home on Oct. 30.

HUDDLE — Head coach Donald Addis gives his team a few tips for a winning year.

Continued from page 14 Twenty-one players met their requirements for summer workouts.

Offense Whitmire will use a spread offense, as it has the last few years, but the Wolves will be running more and also utilizing the wishbone and I formation. Five starters return on offense, all seniors — Ethan Campbell, Allen Glenn, Joseph Brown, DJ Davis and Lance Kitchens. “We need to lean heavily on our seniors because we’re so young,“ said Addis. “We’ve had several meetings about leadership. They have to step up and take charge of this team, lead the way and set the right example.“

Defense The Wolverines use a multiple front-on defense. They’ll base out of a 3-5 or 53 look and go to a six-man front against power run teams. WHS returns six players on defense — Campbell, Glenn, Brown, Davis, Eric

— Staff photo by Cindy Pitts

Shouse and Seth Horton—all are seniors.

Looking ahead Whitmire is the smallest public school in the state and has a tough schedule against much larger schools. “We have a brutal schedule,“ said Addis. “That helped us last year and hopefully it will toughen us up this year.“ WHS finished 6-6 overall and 3-1 in region play in 2008. Christ Church looks to be the front runner in the

region. Landrum is better, with the majority of its team returning. Blacksburg is improved. “It’ll be a struggle in the region,“ said Addis. “Hopefully, when we get to that point of the schedule we’ll be ready for it.

“ W e hope to continue building on the success we’ve had the last several years. We’ll take our lumps early, but hopefully when we get to region play we’ll be ready to take them on.“ The Wolverines’ coaching staff is intact and that will help. Matthew Tepper is a new addition to the JV staff.

■ mchs Continued from page 14 If Mid-Carolina can get depth on both sides of the ball, the team will be a contender this year, says Alexander. Alexander is looking for depth on the field from B.H. Gibbs, Jeremy Neal and Quin Cureton. The Rebels will be running many of the same plays in the pass, but may throw opponents a few new tricks this year. The Rebels will start the season on Aug. 28 against incounty rival Whitmire. They will then head to Midland Valley to face Columbia at home. A twogame road trip will begin with Pelion on Sept. 18, followed by a trip up Highway 76 to Chapin. Then it is back home for the Rebels to face Strom Thurmond and Saluda on Oct. 9. Oct. 16, the Rebels will take a short trip to Gilbert and then play BatesburgLeesville at home. The final match up, and one for county bragging rights, will be on Oct. 30 at Newberry.
