NSIC Offensive Player of the YEAR #11 Isaac Odim (RB, 6-0, 215, Sr., Rochester, Minn. / Rochester C.T.C.) University of Minnesota Duluth

Two-time All-American Isaac Odim injured his left knee in practice on Oct. 16 and is expected to be out for the remainder of the 2010 season. Prior to that, Odim had been leading the nation in scoring (19.0 points per game) and was fifth in both rushing (132.7 yards per game) and all-purpose yards (177.2 ypg). Odim, who owns 17 UMD single-game, single-season and career records, is the Bulldogs’ all-time rushing (4,245 yds.), scoring (492 points) and all-purpose yardage leader (5,593). The fourth-leading vote getter for the 2009 Harlon Hill Trophy, Odim has eclipsed the 100-yard barrier in 25 of his 34 games as a Bulldog, including 12 of 13 outings one year ago when he was chosen to a program-best five different All-American teams. The reigning NSIC Offensive Player of the Year and 2009 CoSIDA Academic All-American also holds down the No. 4 spot on NSIC’s career rushing charts with 3,273 yards in league play.

NSIC Defensive Player of the YEAR

#33 Kiel Fechtelkotter (LB, 6-0, 220, Sr., Lake Nebagamon, Wis. / Northwestern HS)

University of Minnesota Duluth

Fechtelkotter, a three-year starter, captained the Bulldogs to an 11-0 regular season finish, a No. 1 national ranking, and a third straight NSIC championship while anchoring one of the most unyielding defenses in NCAA Division II football. The 2009 and 2010 All-NSIC North Division first team pick currently tops UMD in total tackles with 69 (just three short of his career high), including three quarterbacks sacks. Twice this season (vs. St. Cloud State University and Winona State University), he’s been credited with a 2010 team-best 11 stops and was recognized as the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for that effort against WSU.Fechtelkotter has moved into the No. 12 spot on UMD’s all-time defensive charts, having made 219 stops during his four years with the Bulldogs.

NSIC Offensive NEWCOMER of the YEAR #16 Phillip Klaphake (QB, 6-1, 188, R-FR., Princeton, Minn. / Princeton HS) St. Cloud State University

Phillip Klaphake has completed 180 of 274 pass attempts for 2,490 yards and 23 touchdown strikes in leading the Huskies to a 9-2 overall record and their first NCAA playoff appearance since the 2004 season. The Huskies leading passer and rusher, Klaphake has started all 11 Husky games. He has carried the ball 119 times for 703 yards and nine touchdowns. He rushed for 134 yards and 136 yards in back to back games, and had a career high three rushing touchdowns on Oct. 23. He made his collegiate debut on Sept. 4 and threw for 319 yards and one touchdown. A week later he threw for 301 yards and four touchdowns. In all, he threw for over 300 yards four times during the season with a career high of 335 on Nov. 13, the seventh highest total in school history. He has thrown for over 200 yards in eight games this season. He is the first Husky quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in a single game since the 2006 season. He also threw four touchdown passes in a game three times, one TD shy of tying the school record. Klaphake is the first Husky QB to go over 2,000 yards passing in a single season since the 2004 season and the seventh in school history to pass for over 2,000 in a season. He opened the season with a season high 38 pass attempts and finished the regular season with a career high 28 completions. On Nov. 8, Klaphake ranked eighth in the nation in passing efficiency with a mark of 161.23.

NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the YEAR #10 Denzell Blackmon (DB, 5-10, 190, R-Fr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park HS) Concordia University, St. Paul

Since assuming a starting cornerback position, Denzell Blackmon has displayed a hard hitting ability often found with strong safeties and fast linebackers. But his cover ability is something that doesn’t make highlight reels or the stat sheets. But league coaches have taken notice of Blackmon’s ability, as he’s been a key cog in a Concordia secondary that is ranked 3rd in the NSIC in fewest passing yards allowed, just 167.4 per game. He ranks fifth on the CU defense with 45 tackles (29) solo, an impressive number for a cornerback, and has 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four passes defended including a 44-yard interception for touchdown at Minnesota, Crookston. He also has a forced fumble and a pair of fumble recoveries to his credit. As Concordia’s season has intensified, Blackmon and the secondary have clamped down, allowing just 128.2 passing yards per game over a six week stretch including back-to-back 99-yard defensive efforts in week’s nine and 10, a 107 yard outing in a big win at Wayne State and holding Augustana’s top-flight pass offense to just 119 yards back in week five. They’ve held opponents to 221 yards passing or less in 10 of 11 games this season. He produced a career high nine tackles in week one with a FF and an FR against Minot State, a 38-17 win and has had at least three tackles in eight of 11 games this season.

NSIC COACH OF THE YEAR Bob Nielson (Eighth Season) University of Minnesota Duluth

Bob Nielson was voted by his peers as the NSIC Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a third straight undefeated NSIC season going 10-0 in the NSIC and 6-0 in the NSIC North Division. The Bulldogs led the NSIC in scoring offense (47.9 ppg) and scoring defense (12.0 ppg) while averaging 303 yards a game rushing and nearly 500 yards a game in total offense (482.9 ypg). The 30 straight NSIC wins is only four shy of the record held by the University of Minnesota-Morris who won 34 straight NSIC contests from 1975 to 1979. This marks the third time (2002 & 2008) that Nielson has been named NSIC Coach of the Year. The NSIC is a 14-team, 17-sport, NCAA Division II Conference with teams located in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
