CONGRATULATES SOROR ROBIN KELLY Soror Robin Kelly wins the US 2nd Congressional District (Illinois) Election Chicago, IL/Cary, NC-April 9th, 2013-On April 9th, 2013 constituents from the 2nd Congressional District of the state of Illinois gave their overwhelming stamp of approval as they elected into office; Robin Kelly. As the election votes poured in, with over 76% of the vote; Soror Kelly was confirmed as the new United States Congresswoman for the 2nd Congressional District of Illinois. During the campaign, Soror Kelly has stood at the forefront of the critical issue of gun control highlighting the importance of stronger laws to prevent senseless acts of violence. During Robin Kelly’s acceptance speech on April 9th, 2013 she referenced all the naysayers that counted her out; but even more so she expressed deepest gratitude to those constituents that committed to stand right by her side. She expressed her desire to continue to fight for laws to keep the community safe; and for those who say it can’t be done she issued these two words: “WATCH US!” On December 2nd, 2012, Robin Kelly began this journey in a field with 22 other candidates during the primary. This has been a long road for Soror Kelly; but exuding skill, intelligence, and technique she emerged victorious. Wednesday morning; April 10th, 2013, Soror Kelly will fly directly to Washington, D.C. to be installed into her new role; as she will take office immediately. Soror Kelly has a history of servant leadership on all levels of government; with over 25 years of service to the public including being the first African American woman to serve as chief of staff to an elected constitutional statewide officeholder in Illinois. She has a rich legacy. Robin Kelly was initiated into Sigma Gamma Rho in 1976 through the Zeta Phi chapter at Bradley University, which is located in Peoria, IL. Soror Kelly embodies the hallmark of the organization which is best exemplified through the sorority’s motto “Greater Service, Greater Progress. While Sigma Gamma Rho does not endorse specific candidates for office; the sorority has always understood the importance of social action and is extremely proud of our sister in her political aspirations. 23rd International Grand Basileus Bonita M. Herring stated these words to Soror Kelly and the membership; "Congratulations and best wishes to Soror Robin Kelly as she joins the House of Representatives. Soror Kelly brings a wealth of experience to this position, she is prepared to lead. Let's continue to send our love, support and many prayers to her." Soror Robin Kelly’s win is a tremendous height of attainment that affirms her beacon of light. She shares this light, as this is not the first time that distinguished women of Sigma Gamma Rho have graced the House of Representatives in Washington, DC. With such trailblazing women as Sorors Marie Corinne Morrison Claiborne “Lindy” Boggs (1973-1991/2nd District Louisiana) and current Congresswoman Corrine Brown (5th District Florida), Soror Kelly will be a well received addition to Congress. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority salutes Soror Robin Kelly; as she is well equipped for the job because Sigma women are natural born leaders.
