For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

The Assyrians were about to destroy the Northern Kingdom of Israel (in 722 B.C.) and would threaten the Southern Kingdom of Judah. There are two parts to the book. In the first (Chapters 1-‐39), Isaiah warns about the sins of the people and called them to repent or judgment would befall them. In the second (Chapters 40-‐66), Isaiah changes tone and emphasizes the hope of restoration. Some of the greatest prophecies about Jesus are found in Isaiah! • Isaiah’s call: Read Isaiah 6:1-‐8. Isaiah has an encounter with God in a vision! Angels call out, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is filled with His glory!” What was Isaiah’s reaction? How does the angel respond to Isaiah? Isaiah had his guilt taken away and his sin forgiven! The voice of the Lord says, “Whom shall I send?” What is Isaiah’s response? Through Christ, your guilt is taken away and your sin forgiven! Are you willing to also say, “Here am I. Send me!” Who is God sending you to show love to this week? During this Christmas season, who can you bless with your time, your energy or your resources? • A Child is Born: Read Isaiah 8:22. This verse describes a very dark time. Now Read Isaiah 9:1-‐7. Into the darkness “a light has dawned”. There is great HOPE because of a child. Only Jesus could be “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace”! As a Wonderful Counselor, Jesus guides our lives. As a Mighty God, Jesus is able to do amazing things in us and through us. As an Everlasting Father, Jesus gives us an eternal relationship with God. As the Prince of Peace, Jesus grants us peace in this life, even in trying times. Which of these aspects of Jesus do you need to claim at this time in your life? • “God with Us”: Read Matthew 1:20-‐23. Read Isaiah 7:14 for the prophecy. What does it mean to you that Jesus is “God with us”? • The “Stump of Jesse”: Read Isaiah 11:1-‐9. The “stump of Jesse” refers to the line of King David, as Jesse was David’s father. Read Matthew 1:1-‐6 to see the genealogy of Jesus, which includes King David! What are the attributes of the “Spirit of the Lord” shown in Isaiah 11:2? As you read Isaiah 11:6-‐9, we see the future HOPE for us when there will be an eternal peace in this world through Jesus. • The Spirit of the Lord: Read Isaiah 61:1-‐2 for the prophecy. Now read Luke 4:16-‐21 for the fulfillment of that prophecy. Jesus proclaims that prophecy has been fulfilled! How can you be like Jesus with helping the poor, the prisoners, the blind (spiritually or physically), and the oppressed?
