A letter o f acceptance from the prefentee was, o f this date, lod- July y. ged with the moderator, which letter bears date the ill o f Ju ly . tile prelbytery, ligned by twelve heritors, and a number o f elders and heads of families, praying the prelbytcry to appoint Mr Young to preach at Erlkine, and take what Heps they fheuld think proper for hts fpeedy fertlement; and at the fame rime Mr Brodic produced a liferent-difpofitiom of the patronage to Mr Erlkine by Lord Blantyre, dated at Venice, 8th June 1769. There was likeways prefented to the prelbytery, at this diet, a pe tition from leveral perfons whofe names appeared at the other petiti on given in by Mr Brodie, retracing their fubfcriptions from that paper, becaufe they had been impofed u-pon, having been made to be lieve that it only prayed for a hearing of the prefcntce; whereas it not only prayed for a hearing of him, but that the prelbytery would take proper Heps for his fertlement, which lalt they by no means in tended to apply for, and there was at this time prefented a third pe tition, praying for a hearing of Mr John Snodgrafs preacher of the ,gofpel at Glafgow. The prelbytery then proceeded to conhder the validity o f the prefentation; and, after long reafoning, the roll being called, and the votes marked, it carried, Snftain. This quelhon carried by the mo derator’s calling vote only; and it would not even have come, to that; had not William Walker an elder from :hc parilh-of Erlkine, and as fnch a conllituent member o f the prelbytery, been excluded from his vote, as being intcrelled in the queilion, he being one of the petiti oners for a hearing of M r Snodgrafs. The prelbytery then appointed a diet for the prefentee to preach before them, and to produce his licence and tellimonial. Ac the fame diet there w.as prefented a petition from a great number o f el ders and heads of families, fetting forth, that no prelencation had been lodged within the time preferibed by law, fo that the power o f fupplying the vacancy had devolved upon the prelbytery; and there fore praying, that the prelbytery would grant the petitioners a hear ing of Mr Snodgrafs, in older to his being called to the pall oral charge of that parilh, if found agreeable to them ; and the procura-r tor for thefc petitioners and the above mentioned William Walker craved, that ii might be marked, that they oliered to proteh and -

as) appeal to the fynod of Glafgow and A y r ; which offer the preibytery refufed, finding, that the perfons who made it had no perfona Jlandi in that queffion. At a iubfcquent meeting of preibytery, Mr Young preached, and Aug. 30, 1769. produced his licence and teffimonial, with all which the preibytery declared themfelves fatisfied. At this meeting, Archibald M 'Naughton from Eaftwood, a member o f preibytery, who had been abfent from the preceeding meeting, entered his diffent from the fentence of preibytery, fuflaining the prefeutation, and an appeal to the fynod ol Glafgow and Ayr* A t the fame time William Walker protefted and appeal ed to the fynod, and lodged his realbns, founding inter alia on the refufal o f his vote when, the queffion was put as to the validity o f the prefentation, and contending that no prefeutation had been lodged by the patron within the fix months. It was afterwards propofed by fome, that procedure lhould be lifted til] rhe appeal which Mr M 'Naughton had taken lhould be difeufled; but another motion having been made on the part o f fome gentlemen o f the parilh of Erlkine, that they lhould have a hearing ol Mr Young, the preibytery, without entering on the queftion, Sift procedure, or N ot ? appointed Mr Young to preach at Erlkine next Lord’s day.
