Smells like summer

3 things everyone wants to know about perfume

There are good reasons to switch to a summer specific scent, says beauty expert Angelina Villa-Clarke

Fragrance guru Michael Edwards answers the questions he’s most frequently asked

There’s something deeply evocative about summer fragrances. Notes of mandarin and bergamot will remind you of fun times by the beach while coconut will transport you to the tropics. But there’s a science behind summer scents, too. The temperature of your skin and air around you affects the way perfume molecules evaporate, and as a result, how a perfume smells. In hot climes, winter accords – ambers and musks – can be overpowering. So a light perfume is the key to smelling good as the mercury rises. Here are my warm-weather worthy recommendations:

Why do I hate some scents and love others? Our response to odour and fragrance, say scientists, is partly learned and partly genetic. Very early on in our lives we build up a complex ‘smell bank’ of memories and associations. All this stored information determines whether or not we like a fragrance.

Any tips on travelling with fragrance? Never decant your scent into a smaller plastic flask – the plastic may react with the fragrance. Pack a miniature version of the spray instead. Put any fragrance into your hand luggage rather than in your suitcase because air pressure changes in the baggage compartment may cause sprays to leak. Jet set Marc Jacobs Coffret, £39 (page 17)

Why do we wear fragrance? Because it helps us feel good. Studies show that people who use a fragrance regularly have a more positive attitude towards socialising. What’s more, if you know you smell nice and other people think so too, it’s the ultimate confidence booster.

Look out for these key notes on our fragrances, as identified by industry expert Michael Edwards, to help you find your perfect scent, or select a gift for someone.
