Fresh Water Wells for the Bunong Montagnards Living in Cambodia and Vietnam
Who are the Bunong People and why do we help them? There is a nation of Indiginess People to Vietnam called the Montagnards. This was a name given to the people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam by the French. Within the Montagnard People are many tribes scattered throughout the mountains and deltas of Vietnam. One of these tribes is called “Bunong”. Their existence covers both sides of the border that separates Cambodia and Vietnam. For over 10 years our church, Durham Memorial Baptist Church of Charlotte, NC, has sponsored the “Alliance Bunong Church of Charlotte” by providing a place of worship for them. Through this effort we have come to know all of the Bunong churches in North Carolina. Our church started many different ministries to help assimilate these wonderful loving people to American society such as ESL, Citizenship, jobs and housing, health care and many other essentials for a good life here. Seeing how they worried about their friends and families in Vietnam and Cambodia, we began to offer to help in ways we never imagined. First, some of us traveled to Vietnam in February, 2013 to see for ourselves where our friends here were from and what was needed. Since their faith was so important to them and so dangerous for them to practice it in Vietnam, we, with the help of 12 pastors in Vietnam, translated the Holy Bible into the Bunong dialect. Then we had 10,000 Bibles and Hymnals printed in Vietnam and presented and passed out to the Bunong people in Vietnam. On our second trip to Southeast Asia, we traveled to the Bunong people of Cambodia. We very quickly realized they needed clean water to protect them from all the sicknesses dirty water causes from the rivers and streams. We brought back the desire to supply water wells and water filters to homes. So far we have put in 14 wells in 14 villages plus delivered over 400 water filters for individual homes in Cambodia. This leads us to the need for the same thing for the Bunong people in Vietnam. Some of the restrictions against the churches in Vietnam have been eased. Therefore, we have permission from the Communist Government that allows us to install “machine drilling” of water wells in certain villages. We choose to do this where churches are allowed. We have committed to drilling 7 wells in Vietnam with the hope of more in the near future. We ask for your help to accomplish this with your financial gifts. We need to raise enough money to drill 7 wells at $2,000.00 each and water filters at about $75.00 each. The wells are for the entire village and the
filters are for individual homes not convenient to a well. The filters last for about 7 to 8 years. As you can see your gift will last for many years. The quality of life will improve for many generations to come. Search your heart and help us to help them. Make your check to Durham Memorial Baptist Church and mark it for clean water. The churches address is 1601 Toddville Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28214. For more information feel free to contact Doni-Raye Kendrick at
