Freshwater Mussel Collection Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE) Freshwater Mussel Recovery Program Method Kurt Cheng Description This Freshwater Mussel Recovery Program Method (FMRPM) describes the general conduct of a freshwater mussel collection. A freshwater mussel collection is defined as removing a mussel from its habitat. Freshwater mussels are collected from a population previously determined to be robust for collection or in harm’s way. Collections must have prior authorization in the form of a scientific collection permit from the state where the collection will occur. Freshwater mussel collections are followed by a reintroduction, relocation, placement into a hatchery setting, or another form of release/care previously identified. Summary of Approach The general approach is to collect freshwater mussels from a robust population whereby the population will not be negatively impacted or from a population deemed to be in harm’s way (e.g. bridge construction). Trained scientists collect the desired species of freshwater mussels by hand or by a collection tool. Collected mussels are further processed, tagged, or transported to their new habitat.
