You may be aware that several of our divisions have received inquiries about the Riverbend coal ash impoundment. As a result, DENR has put a letter together to address ash pond closures in general, signed by all the related Directors, to send out to the inquirers. It basically states that when our ash pond closure guidelines are in final draft form, we will send it out to our stakeholders for comments. It also gives an email address contact so that anyone can ask to be listed on the distribution list for comments. Needless to say, we anticipate many folks will be contacting us for copies of our guidelines. Eric Smith and I will be checking the email address given, and will keep the comments received in some organized format – much like we would for public comments on rules. Where you most likely will be involved is when we have to evaluate these comments. Let me know if you have concerns or questions. For now, this is just a heads up. Thanks everyone! Debra J. Folks, The attached letter is for you or your agency to use in response to the letters your program has received recently about the Riverbend coal ash impoundment. Please use this as a template, making sure to add the appropriate names (and address, if warranted) and date to the top of the letter. Since these arrived electronically, it is most appropriate that the division/person receiving the correspondence respond by email. Thanks, Jamie Kritzer Public information officer N.C.
