From Memphis to Puglia: Spring’s Hottest Travel Destinations FE BRUA RY 29, 2016 5:36 P M by K RISTIN TICE STUD E M A N

The temps might still be on the cooler side, but the time to plan spring travel is now. And, no, we’re not talking about a “spring break!” rager. For the inside scoop on the season’s coolest destinations, we turned to a host of travel industry experts. While Australia continues to be a favorite and Iceland is still riding its wave of popularity, they also shared a host of more unexpected destinations—both domestic and international—to look into for your next adventure. So if you’re looking to get away this spring, here are 11 places you should be exploring. Start setting those fare alerts now.

/ 10 Sri Lanka “There are all kinds of new boutique properties coming up in the country formerly known as Ceylon,” says Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder and CEO of Indagare. “There are some cool spas like Tri Lanka and boutique hotels such as Owl and the Pussycat. Plus, an exciting range of shopping is available in Galle and has been discovered by those who found the treasures of Jaipur a decade ago.” Photo: Courtesy of Trilanka Hotel

/ 10 Puglia, Italy “It’s one of Italy’s lesser-known regions,” says Biggs Bradley. “But one with warm weather in spring. Puglia has some wonderful hotels including Borgo Egnazia and the new Masseria Le Carrube and Masseria Trapanà.” Photo: Courtesy of Masseria Le Carrube

/ 10 Iceland “Only afive-hour-and-40-minute flight from New York, Iceland is fast becoming known as the adventure capital of the Northern Hemisphere,” says Biggs Bradley. “Similar to New Zealand, the island nation boasts dramatic landscapes and a range of activities like volcano tunneling and hot spring plunging. We work with a partner who arranges for private glamping in a very cool new camp set on a glacier.” Photo: Alamy

/ 10 Jackson Hole, Wyoming “Under-the-radar destinations for travel this season include Jackson Hole,” says Sarah Gavin, head of communications for Expedia. “It offers the perfect escape for those looking for solace away from the city or crowds of the standard spring break.” Photo: Alamy

/ 10 Memphis, Tennessee “Memphis is another destination that’s flying under the radar this season. Visitors to the Tennessee town will be treated to an incredible blues and rock scene along with some of the nation’s best barbecue,” says Gavin. “Stay at the Peabody for an authentic, old Memphis experience and proximity to the best outdoor entertainment the town has to offer.” Photo: Alamy

/ 10 Denver “For those looking to save this spring, the ever-evolving food and drink scene in Denver is showing strong savings for travelers,” says Gavin. Photo: Robert Kash

/ 10 The Brando, French Polynesia “The Brando is pioneering a mosquito sterilization program, so for those clients who are concerned about Zika, this is the perfect place to go and not have to worry,” says Erina Pindar, managing director of SmartFlyer. “That aside, the Brando is stunning and completely private, which makes it perfect for any romantic getaways. The food and beverage program has Guy Martin at the helm from the two-star Le Grand Véfour in Paris, and all produce is picked from the resort’s own garden and orchard.” Photo: Courtesy of The Brando

/ 10 Australia and New Zealand “We’re sending a lot of clients to Australia and New Zealand these days. Not only does the exchange rate make the destinations more affordable than usual, but these are truly some of the most beautiful places in the world,” says Pindar. “Not many people know this, but Tasmania happens to produce one of the world’s best single-malt Scotch and hiking can’t be beat. Melbourne has some of the best food and coffee anywhere, there’s gorgeous wine country in Margaret River, and New Zealand is famous for being the world’s adventure capital. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” Photo: Alamy

/ 10 Placencia, Belize “Turtle Inn has been here for years now, but the opening of Itz’ana (Ka’ana’s sister property) in November will put Placencia on the map,” says Pindar. “This small fishing village has charming little restaurants, the best gelato in Belize, and the world’s secondlargest coral reef system nearby. We’re really excited about this opening and have been tracking this for a few months now. It will have 39 villas, a farm-to-table restaurant by chef Mara Jernigan, a rum room, and a Mayan-inspired spa using locally harvested botanicals.” Photo: Alamy

/ 10 Japan’s Kansai Region “One of 2014’s hottest openings was the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto and for good reason: It’s the first luxury hotel brand entry into Kyoto. Now we’re eagerly awaiting the opening of Four Seasons Kyoto (just down the street from the Hyatt Regency) and Amanemu—Aman Resorts’s first hot spring resort following its entry into Tokyo last year,” says Pindar. “A few other reasons to go: Gay marriage will be legalized in Takarazuka [between Osaka and Kobe] and it’s honored by way of a traditional ceremony in Kyoto, there are amazing ryokans dotting the regions, and the G7 summit will be here.” Photo: Courtesy of Aman
