Finding “subs” is difficult, the current social safety net has made it so a local is not willing to get up out of bed to earn 300$ per day!!!!! That is not a misprint. A person, off the street, a clean criminal background, with absolutely no teaching experience, can earn slightly under 300$ per day. Someone with a degree, of any kind, can earn more and a person possessing a teaching degree, who chooses only to sub will make even more. Think about it, ‘subbing’ carries with it no responsibility. No tests to mark, no report cards to fill out, your day ends when the kids go home.
WHO DO YOU CONTACT? In each school there resides a very powerful member of their staff. Bow down and make certain you earn their good graces. In the North/ Arctic, find the School Secretary. Substitute positions are not listed on Job sites or advertised. The most direct course is to walk in, ask for the gatekeeper, and let her know of your interest in being a substitute teacher. Another tactic, ensuring demand for your services, would be to contact the various Education-DEC’s, District Education Councils, and find locations most in need. Places without the services of a ‘sub’ will simply cancel classes when a teacher is unavailable. Now what do you think would happen if you came riding [flying] into town?.

There were days, in my little patch of ice, when numerous subs were required, resulting in the janitor being pulled off her duties to enter a class…...get up here, make some cash and set up your future!!!!! HOURS/DAYS OF WORK No one will guarantee a specific number of hours or days of work, but as my beautiful wife can attest, her first stint came on the second day of school, followed by an average of 4-5 days per week until Christmas.
