Season wrap-up

G O Y E O

As always, for compete scores and statistics you can visit our website at goyeo.com under the women’s tennis tab on the left. As much as it’s nearly impossible to do any sort of in-depth recap of 26 dual matches, 3 individual tournaments, and 9 months of season in the limited space that I have here, I will give it a go! Overall, I’d say that this was a successful season for our team and a “step in the right direction” for our program in general. Our team this season had the odd dynamic of being comprised mainly of freshmen and seniors, which made things interesting from a chemistry standpoint. The good news though was that the underlying motive of all the players was our team’s success so they were able to put personal desires aside to focus on the big picture.

A big picture that ended up including 14 wins for the season (the most since 2005!) and a 3rd place finish at the NCAC Championships! Not too bad considering that we once again played a really tough/national schedule and that we were also coming off a year where we had lost our top two players to graduation.

Individually, our players also achieved some great things: Our senior captain Olivia Hayden was named the Gertrude E. Moulton Award recipient at the recent departmental senior luncheon. Further, freshman Ariel Lewis qualified for the NCAA individual tournament this past week in Atlanta, GA. And although she fell in the first round in 3 sets, she learned a lot from the experience and vowed to return to the event and go further next year! Ariel was the first Yeowoman to be selected for the NCAA’s since 2001 when Sarah Jesse qualified. In terms of conference accolades, we had several of our players get recognized. Ariel Lewis got a rare “double”, being named both Rookie and Player of the Year. Kimiko Glynn was the last female player to do that back in 2005 and although I don’t have the exact statistics available, my guess would be that there haven’t been many athletes who have achieved this rare feat. Olivia Hayden was a 2nd team selection in singles and Kelly Sipp was honorable mention. Lastly, Ariel and partner Finley Gates were a 2nd team selection in doubles.
