(none)

Today, I will work in a small group to show an understanding of attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes.

Materials 

One student recording sheet for each group.

Cut-outs of shapes that allow students to compose new two-dimensional shapes (squares, triangles, rectangles, half-circles, quarter circles).

Many copies of nets to make cones, cubes, cylinders, and rectangular prisms.

Scissors.

Prep 

The recording sheet is divided into 4 sections.

Students have access to two- and three-dimensional shapes.

Check for Understanding 

Are students able to collaborate in small groups?

Does the student work show an understanding of the names of shapes?

Are students able to tell the difference between two- and three-dimensional shapes?

Verbal Instruction With input and assistance from the group, students will work to show an understanding the attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes.

Section 1 : Students listen to the following instructions: 

“Compose a new two-dimensional shape from the shapes provided and glue the new shape onto the recording sheet.”

Section 2: Students listen to the following instructions: 

“Draw the plane shape that you composed in box 1.”

Section 3: Students listen to the following instructions: 

“Compose a three-dimensional shape from the nets provided and glue the new shape onto the recording sheet.”

Section 4: Students listen to the following instructions: 

“Draw a picture of where you could find the three-dimensional shape in real life.”

Group Presentation Sample Probing Questions 

Tell us the name of the two-dimensional shape you created.

Tell us the name of the three-dimensional shape you created.

Describe the difference between a two and three-dimensional shape.

Where could you find a

in real life?

Reflective Closure 

Were students able to work together as a group?

Were most groups able to complete their tasks?

Were students able to verbalize the mathematical content?

Name: ____________________________ Date: ______________________________ Directions: Review the names of plane shapes that work together to compose other plane shapes. Name the shapes in each problem.

1. Name the plane shapes that form this triangle.

2. Name the plane shapes that form the trapezoid.

3. Name the plane shapes that form this hexagon.

4. Name the plane shapes that form this square.
