A Davidson win would . . . • Snap a 10-game overall losing streak • Snap a 16-game PFL losing streak • Extend a two-game winning streak over Valpo. • Place Davidson in a tie for ninth with Valpo in the final PFL standings. The Series • Davidson leads the all-time series, which began in 2001, 7-1. • This is the first meeting between the teams since a thrilling overtime game at Valpo in 2012. • A spectacular catch by Lanny Funsten in the back corner of the end zone and a successful extra point by Robert Schick gave Davidson a 28-27 overtime victory over Valpo at Brown Field. • The game was tied at 21-21 heading into overtime, and Tanner Kuramata hauled in a fouryard pass for Valpo to put the Crusaders on top, but Mike Pando missed the extra point and the Crusaders were tagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the touchdown, which gave Davidson the ball on the 13-yard line on its ensuing possession. A nine-yard pass to Funsten and a two-yard run by David Rogers gave the ‘Cats the ball on the two, and quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff then found Funsten in the back right corner for the game-tying score and Funsten’s Davidson all-time record 20th touchdown reception. Schick’s extra point sealed the win. • Carkhuff completed 37-of-56 pass attempts for 395 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for two touchdowns. Rogers caught a career-high eight passes for 87 yards and rushed for 37 yards (124 total) on 22 carries and a touchdown. Reese Williams caught a career-high 10 passes for a career–high 131 yards, and freshman Funsten finished with nine catches for 65 yards, the reception touchdown, and a 14-yard rushing touchdown on a fake field goal. Scouting Valpo • Valparaiso enters with just one league win (Butler), but nearly upset PFL Champion San Diego last week. • Valparaiso is the most disciplined team in the league and ranks fifth in the nation with just 4.55 penalites per game. • The Crusaders rank eighth in the PFL on both sides of the ball, respectively. Rankings Leaders • Nationally, WR William Morris ranks second in FCS in receptions with 88, seventh with 1,102 receiving yards and 27th with seven receiving touchdowns. He leads the PFL in the first two categories, while ranking third in receiving TDs. • LB Matt Casey ranks sixth in the PFL with 8.5 tackles per game. • KR Austin Wells ranks sixth in the PFL with 20.5 yards per return. William Morris Milestone Watch • In addition to being one of the nation’s top receivers this season, William Morris is on pace to rewrite the Davidson record books. • Morris has both career and single-season records in sight, and is most notably within 26 yards of the single-season receiving yards record of 1,128, held by Davidson Hall of Famer Mike Mikolayunas ‘71 since 1970. • He caught his 100th career reception at VMI (9/13) as part of a 16-catch performance. • Morris broke onto the Top 10 list for receptions at Princeton with six.

Last Time Out • A strong defensive effort and five first-half touchdowns led Marist to a 38-7 victory over Davidson in Tenney Stadium. • An interception by Matt Casey and a three-and-out gave Davidson a strong start defensively, but Marist (4-7, 4-4 PFL) was able to score touchdowns on five of their next seven possessions before the halftime break en route to a 35-0 lead. On the other side of the ball, Marist limited Davidson to just 40 yards of offense and two first downs in the first half, ultimately yielding just 144 yards of offense. • Hub Cirame earned Davidson’s lone score late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard run, while William Morris was the Wildcats’ top producer on offense, hauling in 12 catches for 65 yards. The performance moved Morris up to third alltime at Davidson with 165 career receptions. Toledo was 7-1 in the MAC and shared the West Division title. • Before Toledo, Nichols served as an assistant at Marshall University for three seasons after completing two seasons as a graduate assistant at Ohio State from 2004-05, where he assisted with the defensive backs and defensive line. • A native of Dunwoody, Ga., Nichols graduated from Davidson College in 2003 with bachelor’s degrees in political science and history. • Nichols was a first-team All-Pioneer League and a first-team Pioneer League All-Academic
selection as a senior in Davidson’s first year in the PFL, and was named honorable mention AllAmerica by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. • Nichols departed as the school record holder for career passing yards (5,822), completions (465) and touchdown passes (51), and compiled a 22-6 record as a starting QB. After seeing limited action as a freshman, Nichols won the starting job prior to his sophomore year and guided the ‘Cats to a 10-0 season. His junior year was cut short by a knee injury, but Nichols bounced back as a senior and matched the school record for touchdown passes in a single season with 25. • Nichols now ranks third in passing yards and completions after being surpassed by Ryan Alexander ’09 and Jonathan Carkhuff ‘13. He is also now third to Alexander and Carkhuff in career passing touchdowns. • Nichols is the first Davidson alumnus to guide the football program on a full-time basis since Dave Fagg ’58, who finished his second coaching stint with the Wildcats following the 1992 season. He joins Matt Spear ’93 (men’s soccer) as the only other Davidson alum currently serving as a head coach at Davidson. Stetson Overcomes Halftime Deficit • Despite 215 rushing yards by Jeffrey Keil, Davidson was unable to overcome five turnovers, as Stetson held off the Wildcats, 40-34. • The lead changed seven times before Stetson claimed it for good late in the third quarter. • Keil carried the ball 33 times, scored two touchdowns and became just the sixth player in school history to run for more than 200 yards in a contest. In addition, William Morris caught four passes for 85 yards, moving into a tie for fourth (Barrett Johnson, 2000-03) in career receiving yards with 2,157. • Making his first career start under center, Davidson freshman Taylor Mitchell finished 19-of-40 for 264 yards, while throwing two touchdown passes and three interceptions. His classmate, Nick Wheeler, led the Wildcat receivers with a personal-best 106 yards on eight catches. Tight end Trey Huelskamp continued his career year, making five catches for 52 yards with one touchdown. • Stetson’s offense was led by its ground game, as Cole Mazza rushed 21 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Donald Payne led the Stetson defense with 12 tackles, including two behind the line, and a fumble recovery, while Ryan Powers returned two interceptions for a total of 65 yards. The Hatter secondary was credited with a total of seven pass breakups. • The ‘Cats outgained the Hatters offensively with 491 yards to their 397, but yielded touchdowns following four of their five turnovers. Davidson led 24-20 at halftime, but a Powers interception led to a go-ahead touchdown for Stetson early in the third quarter. Keil put Davidson back ahead for the fourth-andfinal time with a 17-yard touchdown, 31-27, with 9:47 remaining in the third, but a 2-yard Tentler touchdown pass to Jonathan Strahl capped the ensuing drive for a 33-31 Hatter lead that would not be reinquished. Heartbreaker at Campbell • Davidson led from the game’s opening drive until inside the final minute, but Campbell, which trailed by as much as 17 in the first half, scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to comeback and defeat the Wildcats, 28-27, in Barker-Lane Stadium.
• Turnovers swung the momentum of the game throughout, but an interception by Campbell’s Aaron Nichols at the Davidson 32-yardline with 1:40 remaining proved to be the biggest. Davidson had preserved its six-point lead with a fourth-down stop at its own 20 with 2:38 remaining, but faced 3rd-and-4 at its own 26 when trying to run the clock out on its ensuing offensive possession. The ‘Cats tried to ice the game by throwing for a first down, but J.P. Douglas’ pass was tipped in the air and Nichols picked it off. • Campbell quarterback David Salmon connected with Ben Bolling for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds remaining, and Mitchell Brown’s extra point proved to be the game-winning point. • The ‘Cats held advantages in many key statistical areas, most notably outgaining the Camels 410 yards to 275. The ‘Cats started fast with two touchdowns in the first quarter, keyed by eight receptions for 108 yards by William Morris. Morris finished with 11 catches for 141 yards, moving up to eight all-time at Davidson in career receptions (140), while also becoming the seventh Wildcat to surpass 2000 career yards receiving by reaching 2,072.0
who ultimately caught 15 passes for 158 yards and matched a school record with three receiving touchdowns, with 5:24 remaining, both teams scored two TD’s each, giving Davidson the ball with 56 seconds remaining. A 13-yard J.P. Douglas scramble to the Dayton 27 with 1.4 seconds remaining, set up a 44-yard field goal attempt for Smith. • Smith, who had not converted a field goal over 25 yards or even attempted one over 36 yards in his young collegiate career, drilled it, sending the game to overtime. • Both teams scored touchdowns and kicked extra points in the first overtime. The game remained tied after the second overtime, as both kickers missed long-distance field goals. • In the third, both teams scored touchdowns but failed on mandatory two-point conversion tries. In the fourth, both teams found the end zone again and converted for two. • The Flyers opened overtime No. 5 on offense and Kacsor rushed into the end zone from six yards out, but the two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete. It did not matter though, as Manning intercepted a pass from Douglas on the second play of the ensuing Davidson drive. • Douglas finished with multiple career highs in the game, completing 38-of-58 pass attempts with four touchdowns. He totaled 313 yards in the air, and rushed for 62 yards on a career-high 17 attempts with one touchdown. Joining Morris with a strong receiving day was Tyler Hickey, who caught a career-high 10 passes for 53 yards.
game in Davidson history. J.P. Douglas also enjoyed a career day, as he completed 28 of 41 passing attempts for 317 yards – all career highs – and threw one touchdown to Morris along with one interception when he was hit as he threw. • David Rogers gained 103 yards on 10 rushes with two touchdowns, helping Davidson rack up 531 yards of offense, it’s most since racking up 566 against Johnson C. Smith in 2011. • However, VMI started fast and made big plays to maintain the lead throughout the contest, gaining 597 yards of offense. Davidson was only able to come away with one field goal in three red zone trips in the first half, and surrendered a pair of turnovers in the second half. Uniting For a Good Cause • Members of the Davidson and College of Faith football teams briefly united for a good cause at the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte on the Monday prior to their game to serve lunch. Dan Casey, Nate Casey, Reese Schaffner and head coach Paul Nichols represented Davidson.

Davidson returned to Division I-AA (now known as Division I FCS) in 1993 as an independent member, but received a geographic waiver from the NCAA to play a Divison III schedule, which it did until the early 2000’s. Davidson joined the Pioneer Football League, the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference, in 2001. The PFL champion now receives an automatic bid in the NCAA FCS playoffs. In the early 1900’s Davidson played not only regional foes but today’s traditional college football powers, winning the North Carolina State Championship in 1926. From 1936-75 and 1983-86, Davidson was a member of the Southern Conference, winning the legue championship and playing in the Tangerine Bowl in 1969. Difficult Decade • In the 11 seasons since Nichols graduated, the Wildcats have tallied more wins than losses just twice, and have been unable to match the 7-3 mark of the 2002 team Nichols quarterbacked as a senior.
