2015 BINGHAMTON MEN’S LACROSSE GAME NOTES SCOTT NELSON

HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON NC STATE ‘82

Scott Nelson was named head coach of the Binghamton lacrosse program on May 18, 2011. Nelson opens his fourth season at the helm of Binghamton, a year in which he guided the Bearcats to their best conference record since 2004 and was honored with America East Co-Coach of the Year honors. In 27 years of coaching in collegiate lacrosse, he has recruited and coached more than 100 All-Americans and his teams have won at nearly a 65% clip, including three national titles on the Division III level. Nelson’s squad in 2014 had a banner year that resulted in a trip back to the America East tournament for the first time since 2011. The Bearcats went 4-1 in conference play, earning a two seed at the America East Championship. Six players were named on the first two allconference teams and Binghamton also added a pair of All-Rookie and All-Academic selections. His Coach of the Year award is the third he’s received since 2004 (2011-MAAC Coach of the Year, 2004-New England Coach of the Year). His second season with the program saw his squad secure a 5-9 record, just narrowly missing the America East tournament on the last day of the regular season. He helped transform the defense in 2013 as the Bearcats finished first in the country in man-down defense (allowing just four goals in 29 opportunities). BU had a pair of all-conference and all-academic selections under his watch during 2013. In 2012, Nelson guided the Bearcats to one of their best offensive seasons in school history. The team scored a program-record 9.54 goals per game and had a pair of players break the single season points record in just 13 contests. Four players were named to the all-conference squad in 2012 and a pair of student-athletes were selected as all-academic performers. Nelson served as the head coach of Marist from 2009-11, guiding the Red Foxes to eight wins in each of his last two seasons. His 2011 team finished the regular season by winning seven straight games (program’s longest win streak), reaching the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament for the second consecutive year. They went 4-2 in league play to finish as regular season runners-up. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Nelson was named MAAC Coach of the Year. His 2010 Marist team won the most regular season games (8) in six years and reached the MAAC tournament for the first time in five seasons. Before taking over at Marist, Nelson was the head coach at Brown for six seasons, leading the Ivy League members to a top-10 national ranking in 2004 and 2005. His 2002 squad went 4-2 in the Ivy, giving Brown its first winning conference season in five years. In 2004, Nelson was named New England Coach of the Year after his team went 9-5 and was nationally ranked in the top-10. Nelson made a name for himself while at Division III Nazareth, where he led the Rochester-based school to NCAA titles in 1992, 1996 and 1997. He was the program’s inaugural coach in 1986 and produced 12 NCAA appearances in 15 years, including five national semifinal berths and four straight trips to the championship game (1995-98). Nelson’s 1996 Golden Flyers went a perfect 15-0 en route to the program’s second NCAA crown. He never had a losing season at Nazareth and concluded his tenure there with 10 consecutive NCAA appearances and 13 straight seasons with 10 or more wins. His 177-40 record at Nazareth represented one of the highest win percentages (82%) in the nation over that span. He began his coaching career at Rutgers, where he was an assistant from 1982-85. He is a 1982 graduate of North Carolina State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and was a standout lacrosse player. Nelson has been inducted into three Halls of Fame: the Rochester Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Hudson Valley Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Nazareth Hall of Fame. He has served on numerous national-level lacrosse committees, including the NCAA Lacrosse Rules Committee, the NCAA Regional Tournament Selection Committee and the Division III All-American committee (chairman). Nelson was a member of the USA Team Selection Committee and was a finalist for the Team USA coaching staff. Scott and his wife, Lynne, have three sons, Tucker, Jake and Jared. Lynne, a former elite soccer player at Nazareth, is also a member of that school’s Hall of Fame. Tucker is a current standout on the Binghamton lacrosse team, entering his senior season in 2015.

2015 BINGHAMTON MEN’S LACROSSE GAME NOTES Binghamton Men’s Lacrosse Assistant Coaches Matt Francis - 3rd season (Marist ‘10) - Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Matt Francis is in his third year with the Binghamton men’s lacrosse program. In 2013, Francis helped transform the Bearcats at the faceoff ‘x’ by having one of the top-two faceoff men in the America East in Alex Doerflein. Most recently as an assistant at Marist from 2010-12, Francis was instrumental in helping guide the Red Foxes to six and eight wins, respectively in his pair of seasons with the MAAC school. During a four-year playing career at Marist, Francis logged substantial time as a faceoff specialist for the Red Foxes. Following a terrific junior campaign, he finished fifth in the nation securing 6.46 ground balls per game and obtained an outstanding faceoff percentage of .576 (seventh nationally). In his final season, Francis won an impressive 158 face-offs and helped push his team to the MAAC semifinals for the first time since 2006. Matt was also a standout in the classroom as well. A three-time MAAC All-Academic honoree, Matt earned the President’s Academic Achievement award as a senior, an award that is handed out annually to the male and female student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at Marist. Continuing his education at Marist, Francis completed his master’s in Business Administration in the spring of 2012. He served as an assistant coach on Nelson’s coaching staff in 2011 and once again with newly appointed head coach Keegan Wilkinson in 2012. Matt was responsible for faceoffs, wing play and was the assistant defensive coordinator for the Red Foxes. He also was a big help in the Center for Student-Athlete Enhancement at Marist, serving as an academic advisor and main contact for 10 of 23 athletic programs. During his two-year tenure, he helped secure 14 MAAC All-Academic selections and one USILA Scholar All-American.

Erich Skelly - 2nd season (Brockport ‘10) - Assistant Coach Erich Skelly joined the Binghamton lacrosse program in the fall of 2013. Skelly comes from SUNY Brockport where he served as an assistant and defensive coordinator at his Alma mater. The Buffalo native was employed by the Golden Eagles from 2011-2013, helping guide them to an overall record of 17-27 during that span. Last season, he directed his defense to a GAA of 9.07, the third best mark in program history since 2004. He enjoyed a successful four-year playing career at the College at Brockport where he competed in 48 games with the Golden Eagles. He led the squad in caused turnovers in both his junior and senior seasons. He accumulated 82 career ground balls to go along with two goals and two assists from 2007-10. A three-time SUNYAC All-Academic Team member, Skelly graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.76. In addition to his collegiate and high school coaching experience, Skelly has been active teaching the game to youth players. He was the camp director of FastBreak Lacrosse Camp for three years in Amherst, N.Y. and also delivered instruction at both the University of Michigan and Fairfield University lacrosse camps.

Mike Antonozzi - 1st Season (Binghamton ‘14) - Assistant Coach Mike Antinozzi joins Nelson’s staff for the 2015 season after one of the most proflic careers in Binghamton men’s lacrosse history. Antinozzi was added to the fourth-year head coach’s staff prior to the 2014 fall season and will work with the midfielders and offense. Antinozzi ranks second all-time in program history in career goals (89) and points (126). The standout from Fallston, Md. was a four-time America East all-conference selection being named to the first-team as a sophomore after scoring 32 goals, which ranked 16th in the nation. Antinozzi was a two-time second-team selection and earned all-rookie honors during a freshman campaign that produced 14 goals. Antinozzi recorded at least one point in all 15 games in 2014 and ended his career on a 46-game point scoring streak. Antinozzi’s 46 points in 2012 set a Binghamton single-season record eclipsing an eight-year old mark set by Matt McNamara (45) in 2004. A prolific scorer, Antinozzi recorded 12 career hat-tricks, seconded only to Binghamton’s all-time leader in goals, Matt Spring (20). Antinozzi graduate from Binghamton University in May of 2014 with a degree in accounting. Antinozzi was a three-time member of the America East Honor Roll.
