The Tip... - Drexel is playing for its third consecutive winning season this year, which would mark the first time in the program’s history that the team had back-to-back-to-back winning years. The last time Drexel posted two straight seasons above .500 was during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. - In three seasons at the helm Head Coach Denise Dillon has posted 44 wins, this is the second highest wing total of any coach after three years guiding the Dragons. - Narissa Suber is Drexel’s top returning scorer this season. She averaged 14.4 ppg last season and holds school records for career three-pointers (160), single-season three-pointers (87) and owns a share of the record for single-game threes with nine. She set all three of these records last season when she ranked sixth in the nation in three-pointers per game and was in the top 40 in three-point shooting percentage. - The Dragons are an even 12-12 in season openers during the team’s 24-year history. Two years ago when the team played to it’s best CAA finish ever, it won it’s season-opener at home against Saint Joseph’s. Last season the Dragons lost on the road in the Preseason WNIT at Boston College.

Game Day Matchup Drexel tips off its 2006-07 campaign with a young squad focused on turning out a third straight winning season. The Dragons are led by three-point sharp-shooter Narissa Suber, who holds all of Drexel’s long-distance shooting records and is the team’s top returning scorer. Kira Karlstrom is the lone senior on the team and has been the starting point guard intermitently throughout her career at Drexel. Junior Nicole Hester was the team’s best defensive player last season and will likely step in as one of the Dragons’ primary sources of scoring this year. Juniors Delise Johnson, Anora Suber and Anna Karlsson will be looked to as scorers in the post this season and will help to bring along a trio of freshmen forwards. Gabriela Marginean, Jennifer Stjarnstrom and Nicole McCombs will be asked to contribute as rookies in the post. The backcourt will be bolstered by the addition of redshirt freshman Alison Lupariello and Andrea Peterson. Lupariello sat out last season and is ready to run the offense this year. Peterson, a transfer from Big East power St. John’s, will be eligible to join the team in mid-December.

Penn State is looking to improve on a sub-par 2005-06 season. The Lady Lions return all five of their starters from a team that finished 13-16 last year, which was the first losing record in the program’s modern history. Leading the Lady Lions this year is 6foot-4 center Amanda Brown who was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection last season. Kam Gissendanner was the team’s secondleading scorer last year in her first year with the team after transferring from North Carolina State. The 6-foot guard causes matchup problems for most opponents and has the ability to score in bunches. Brianne O’Rourke and Adrienne Squire shore up the frontcourt with Gissendanner. O’Rourke led the Big Ten in assists last season and was named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team. Squire is the team’s primary three-point threat, knocking down the deep ball at a 36 percent clip. She was also the nation’s most accurate free-throw shooter last season, setting a new NCAA record by making 80 of 83 free throws for .964 percent accuracy. Talented freshmen Tyra Grant and Meggan Quinn bring a load of talent to the team and will likely help it bounce back this year.

The 2006-07 Dragons are playing to make Drexel history this season. Another winning season would be the team's third straight, marking the first three-season winning trend in the history of the program. The team will have a much different look this season, without the floor leadership of last year's senior captains Catherine Scanlon, Jackie Falson and Candice Williams, but the recruiting of Head Coach Denise Dillon and her staff has reloaded the team with height and shooting ability. With a game plan that has proven its effectiveness in conference play over the past two years, the team's success depends solely on its ability to incorporate the newcomers into the system. Drexel will feature one of its most talented back courts this season. Senior Kira Karlstrom will provide the leadership of three years of experience as a capable point guard. Narissa Suber will be the team’s primary scoring threat this season. Already the holder of most of Drexel’s three-point shooting records, Suber will take aim for conference and national records for long-distance proficiency this season. Redshirt freshman Alison Lupariello has proven to be a dangerous outside threat as well, showing her accuracy in exhibition games this fall after sitting out last season. She understands the Dragons’ offense and can also run the point. Andrea Peterson, a transfer from St. John’s, will join the team in December and could jump into the starting lineup. Capable walkon guards Stacy McCullough and Kelly Golden will also see minutes to spell the starters. In the post, Drexel will be a much taller team this year. The addition of three six-foot-plus freshmen forwards will add depth to a frontline that is comprised of juniors Nicole Hester, Delise Johnson, Anna Karlsson and Anora Suber. Hester was the team’s best defensive player last season and is a talented guard off the dribble and on perimeter shots. Johnson has the ability to score on jumpshots and has improved her skills with her back to the basket. Karlsson could be another perimeter threat for the Dragons and could be used to defend bigger guards and small forwards. Anora Suber is hard-working forward who can also shoot from outside and will see a solid amount of time this season. Freshman Gabriela Marginean is a tenacious worker in the post and a talented scorer and ball handler. Her experience with the Romanian National Team has made her a battle-tested competitor. Jennifer Stjarnstrom is the tallest of the freshmen recruits at 6foot-4. She is an active defender in the post, but can also step outside to handle and shoot the ball. She will likely cause match-up problems for opposing defenses this season. Nicole McCombs is a force in the lane. She will be a tough defender for the Dragons and has the ability to dominate on the boards as well. The Dragons play a tough non-conference schedule this season including perennial regional powers Penn State and Temple and Philadelphia rivals La Salle and Penn. The Colonial Athletic Association will be a tough conference this season as 75 percent of the conference’s starting lineups will return this year and 12 of the CAA’s 15 All-Conference Team members will be back this season. Drexel was picked to finish ninth in the conference pre-season media poll. The last time the Dragons were picked ninth was in 2004-05 when the team had its best season and finished third.

W o m e n ’ s B a s k e t b a l l 2006-07 Coming to a Court Near You... Drexel has enticed some of the top talent to return home and join the Dragons. Andrea Peterson and Brooke Cornish, who were teammates on Archbishop Carroll’s back-to-back Catholic League Championship teams have transferred to Drexel from top-flight college programs. Peterson, who transferred from St. John’s in 2005 will join the Dragons this season in mid-December after the completion of the fall term. She played two seasons at St. John’s before coming to Drexel. Peterson started 18 games as a freshman point guard with the Red Storm in 2004-05, averaging 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She also shot nearly 50 percent from three-point range which will help her fit nicely into the Dragons' offensive scheme. Peterson was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Nov. 29. She also helped lead St. John's to the second round of the conference tournament and a WNIT victory over Delaware in her rookie season. At Carroll, Peterson was a two-time First Team All-Catholic League selection. Her teammate at Archbishop Carroll, Brooke Cornish, transferred to Drexel after sitting out most of an injury-plagued freshman year at Florida. Cornish, a 6-foot-4 forward, will be eligible to play at the start of the 2007-08 season. Cornish holds Philadelphia Catholic League records with 106 blocked shots in the 2004 season and 15 in a single game against Cardinal Dougherty in the 2003 league play-offs. Despite sitting out her senior season at Archbishop Carroll with an injury, Cornish was invited to the 2004 McDonald's All-American game and the WBCA All-American game. She was an All-Delaware County and AllCatholic League selection in 2003 and 2004 as well as an honorable mention Street & Smith All-American. After averaging 8.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg and 3.8 bpg as a junior in 2004, she was invited to participate in the Adidas Top Ten All-American Camp. Cornish comes from a basketball background. Her mother, Lisa Ortlip Cornish starred for Villanova in the 1980s and is a member of the Big 5 Hall of Fame.

Foreign Flair The Dragons have a distinctively foreign flair this season with a trio of forwards from abroad on the roster. The trend started in 2004 when Anna Karlsson joined the team after playing for Adecco Estudiantes in Madrid, Spain. Karlsson is a forward by size, but has the ability to shoot from outside and handle the ball. She could cause some matchup problems for opponents this season if her shots start falling early. This season the Dragons brought on two more post players from Europe to add height and versatility to the team. Gabriela Marginean is a 6-foot-1 forward from Romania who has quickly gained a reputation as a hard worker. She is a physical defender and is tenacious on the boards. Marginean also has an accurate jumpshot from outside and can shoot off the dribble, making her hard to defend. Fellow freshman Jennifer Stjarnstrom has gained a great deal of experience playing for the Swedish Under-18 National Team. At 6-foot-4, Stjarnstrom is the tallest of the Dragons and will likely draw some of the difficult defensive assignments in the post this season. She can handle the ball and shoot outside as well.
