CAPE ANN DIV 1 and 2  ZONE AND PRESS RULES.    1. For the 6th grade program, no zone is allowed, only man to man defense. To clarify, teams can employ a zone press with trapping in the back court, but must revert to man-to-man when the ball crosses into the front court. Pressing is allowed all game. 2. For the 5th Grade Program, man-to-man defense is required. Also for the 5th Grade: A. Man-to-man pressing only allowed during last 2 minutes of each half. B. Man to Man Defense means to keep within 3 to 4 feet of your man on strong side. No double-teaming will take place. Weak side defenders may put one (1) foot in the lane. Two feet in the lane on weak side or double-teaming is a violation which results in a warning. Technical fouls may be awarded by the referee after the second warning. C. 5th grade will play a 3 minute OT period if necessary. Pressing is allowed only in the last 2 minutes of any OT period D. Man-to-man defense does allow for ‘help-side’ defensive concepts to be employed. The intention is to discourage teams on the offensive side from isolating one strong player on one side of the court and going 'one on one' for the entire game or at least for an extended number of times. The rule: No zones are allowed at the 5th grade level. In the frontcourt, between the 3 point arc and the timeline, 'help' defense is not allowed. This means there is no trapping or double teaming. (However, if the offensive team sends the other 4 players to the farthest 4 corners of the court, the defensive players will NOT be expected to stay within 3 to 4 feet of their man, EVEN OUTSIDE the 3 pt. arc.) In the area between the 3 point arc and the 'paint', help defense is allowed, but it must be ‘help & recover’ or ‘switching’ defense, so one offensive player is guarded by only one defensive player. This means that a double team or a 'trap' would not be allowed in this area. Inside the paint there is no restriction. The feeling here is that inside the paint there is so much traffic that it is too difficult for a referee to manage the type of defense being played.

NORTH SHORE GIRLS ZONE and PRESS RULES

For the 5th Grade and 6th Grade, man-to-man defense is required. For the 7th grade and older a zone defense is allowed. Coaches will emphasize teaching man-to-man at all levels of play.

For the 6th grade, full court man to man pressing and trapping is allowed in the last 2 minutes of each half, however, no pressing is allowed after a 10 point lead. For the 5th grade, man-to-man pressing only allowed during last 2 minutes of each game. However, no pressing is allowed after a 10 point lead. 5th Graders are allowed to cross over the free throw line when shooting. (They must start behind the line). A. Points of Clarification for 5th & 6th Graders: I.

II.

Man-to-man defense does allow for ‘help-side’ defensive concepts to be employed. The intention is to discourage teams on the offensive side from isolating one strong player on one side of the court and going 'one on one' for the entire game or at least for an extended number of times.

III.

The rule: No zones are allowed.

IV.

In the front court, between the 3 point arc and the half court line, 'help' defense is not allowed. This means there is no trapping or double teaming. (However, If the offensive team sends the other 4 players to the farthest 4 corners of the court, the defensive players will NOT be expected to stay within 3 to 4 feet of their man, EVEN OUTSIDE the 3 pt. arc.)

In the area between the 3 point arc and the 'paint', help defense is allowed, but it must be ‘help & recover’ or ‘switching’ defense, so one offensive player is guarded by only one defensive player. This means that a double team or a 'trap' would not be allowed in this area. Inside the paint there is no restriction. The feeling here is that inside the paint there is so much traffic that it is too difficult for a referee to manage the type of defense being played.

NORTH SHORE BOYS DIV 3 and 4 Press and Zone Rules  5th Grade Division • •

No pressing until the last 2 minutes of each half. Must play man-to-man defense. No double team; no zone defense allowed.

6th Grade Division •

Must play man-to-man defense from end line to end line. No double team; no zone.

Clarifications:

Man to Man Defense means to keep within 3 to 4 feet of your man on strong side. Man-to-man defense does allow for ‘help-side’ defensive concepts to be employed. Help defense allows for a weak side defender to help when a teammate has been beat by the offensive player. The intention is to discourage the offense from isolating one strong player on one side of the court and going 'one on one' throughout the game. If the offensive team sends the other 4 players to the farthest 4 corners of the court, the defensive players will NOT be expected to stay within 3 to 4 feet of their man, even outside the 3 point arc.

Inside the paint there is no restriction. The feeling here is that inside the paint there is so much traffic that it is too difficult to enforce the rule. The game officials will have final say for interpreting the violation. If there is no advantage being gained then the official in all likelihood may not call a violation. In the area between the 3-point arc and the paint, help defense is allowed, but it must be "help and recover" or "switching" defense, so that one offensive player is guarded by only one defensive player. This means a double team or "trap" would not be allowed.

If a coach has an issue with the rule it is to be addressed with their TOWN COORDINATOR NOT the game officials or the opposing coach, or league commissioner. The coordinator will then deal directly with the league from there.
