CHANGING OF THE GUARD After two-plus decades as an assistant, and 10 as the team’s head coach, Doug Smith hung up his spikes following the 2014 season. UC Riverside did not have to go far to find his replacement, as the Highlanders tabbed former UCR catcher and 14-year major league pitcher Troy Percival ’91 to lead the program. STARTING OVER The Highlanders will sport an entirely new starting weekend rotation this season as last year’s trio of Jake Smigelski (8-6, 3.25), Zach Varela (5-5, 3.74) and Ben Doucette (3-6, 5.52) are all gone due to graduation and/or the MLB Draft. ONE OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD UC Riverside returns three regulars from last year’s starting nine position players—Joe Chavez (.281/.376/.382), Drake Zarate (.277/.371/.336) and Matt Ellis (.249/.335/.272). A fourth returnee, Thomas Walker (.328/.382/.443), will miss the season with an injury. SO FAR GONE Drake Zarate, who was one of the team’s most consistent hitters through the season’s first six weeks (.326/.385/.358), has not played since suffering an injury March 24 vs. Oregon. YOUNG GUNS The Highlanders have given starts to 17 different position players so far this season, nine of whom are freshmen and three of whom are sophomores. STRIKING RESULTS Angel Landazuri has 45 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched this year. The last member of the Highlanders to strike out at least one batter per inning was Trevor Frank who Kd 44 batters in 44.0 innings in 2013. WRONG WAY RUN The Highlanders have lost 11 straight games which is the longest such streak in the Division I history of the program.

TROY PERCIVAL
UC Riverside Head Baseball Coach
UC Riverside welcomed Troy Percival ‘91 back to the Highlanders family as its new head baseball coach on July 29, 2014. Percival was a catcher during his three years with the Highlanders, and was drafted after his junior year by the California Angels in the sixth round of the 1990 Amateur Draft. Following a year as a catcher in the minors, Percival was converted to a relief pitcher, and during his rookie season of 1995, he finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year balloting, going 3-2 with three saves and a 1.95 ERA, striking out 94 batters in 74.0 innings. The Angels made him their full-time closer in 1996, and he rewarded them by recording 36 saves and striking out 100 batters in 74.0 innings. Percival earned his first of four All-Star nods that season as he finished fourth in the league in saves. Two years later he would notch 42 saves, the second most in Angels history at the time, en route to his second All-Star selection. Percival recorded 30 or more saves in each of the next six seasons, including the
2002 campaign where he went 4-1 with a 1.92 ERA and 40 saves. He also was credited with seven saves during the Angels 2002 postseason run, including Game 7 of the Halos’ World Series victory over the San Francisco Giants. By the time his professional career ended in 2009, Percival had 358 saves on his big-league résumé, which is still ninth on Major League Baseball’s all-time career list. Since his retirement from major league baseball, Percival has worked as a volunteer pitching coach for Riverside Poly High School in Riverside (2010-12), and for the past two seasons has been the head coach at his high school alma mater, Moreno Valley High School. He also spent a year working in the Angels organization as a roving pitching instructor. Percival has remained active with the Highlanders since being drafted by the Angels, working out with the team in preparation for spring training, and attending alumni games and golf fundraisers for the program. He also famously paid for and built the Highlanders’ locker rooms at the Riverside Sports Complex prior to the 2007 season
POWER SURGE In the first three years following the NCAA’s 2011 decision to alter the composition of the bats in an effort to decrease scoring, UC Riverside hit 17, 13 and 14 home runs. The Highlanders leader in each of those season had just 4 homers. In 2014, UCR hit 25 home runs, with Nick Vilter’s 10 leading the squad. This year, UC Riverside has 13 home runs. Vince Fernandez leads the team with 5.
HIGHLANDEEEEEEEERS The Highlanders defense has been a bit of an Achilles Heel since the 2012 season. The year prior, UC Riverside averaged less than an error per game and allowed just 16 unearned runs on the season. Since then, the Highlanders are averaging 1.65 errors per game, and allowing 1.27 unearned runs per game.
WALK THIS WAY The 2007 version of the Highlanders set the team’s Division I-era record for walks in a season with 252 in 59 games. UC Riverside came within shouting distance of that mark in two of the last three seasons. This season they project to walk 157 times over 54 games Year Walks Gms 2007 252 59 2012 229 54 2014 227 54 2015

2015 UCR Baseball Game Notes - Vol. 57, No. 10.1 DOUBLE DIGIT DOH! The Highlanders have allowed 10 or more runs in a game on 12 occasions this year including in 9 of the last 11 games. Last season, they gave up 10 or more runs in a game on 2 occasions.
SPEED & STRENGTH The Highlanders finished first in the Big West Conference in home runs last season and third in steals. The last conference team to finish the year ranked first in steals and home runs was Cal State Fullerton in 2010.
PAIR OF JACKS Casey Henderson crushed two home runs in the same game on Saturday, March 28 in a 9-8 extra-inning loss at UC Davis. The last member of the Highlanders to hit a pair of dingers in the same game was Nick Vilter who did it on March 1, 2014 at CSU Bakersfield.
DOUBLE DIGIT BURGLED BAGS The Highlanders had three players with 10 or more stolen bases last year—Joe Chavez (22), Devyn Bolasky (14) and David Andriese (12). The last time UC Riverside had three or more players with double-digit stolen base totals was in 2006 when Brett Bigler stole 27, DJ Hollingsworth swiped 22 and Aaron Grant snagged 11.
KING OF THE HILL Angel Landazuri struck out 13 Tulane batters in eight innings of work on March 20 of this year. It is the most strikeouts for a member of the Highlanders since Eddie Orozco struck out 15 Sacramento State batters on March 10, 2012. QUARTER CENTURY The Highlanders scored 25 runs in a 25-0 shutout of North Dakota on Sunday, May 15. That is the most runs the Highlanders have scored since May 29, 2010 when they beat UC Davis, 26-7, as well as the largest margin of victory in program history. BONUS BASEBALL The Highlanders played 15 innings in a 6-3 win at San Francisco on March 7. The last time they played more innings in a game was a 16-inning affair at UC Davis on May 27, 2011 which they lost 2-1. UC Riverside played 13 innings at home in a 2-1 victory over Tulane on March 20 of this year. That tied the mark for the most innings played at The Plex during the team’s Division I era originally set in an 11-8 loss to Cal Poly on May 17, 2002. They tied that 13-inning mark just a few days later on March 24 in a 10-7 loss to #22 Oregon.
OUT OF THE GATES The Highlanders went 4-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2010 campaign. The last time UC Riverside won more than four straight games to start a season was back in 2007 when they started the year 5-0. The 2003 team also began the season 5-0. Both of those squads advanced to the NCAA Tournament. SWEEPS WEEK The Highlanders opened the 2015 season with a fourgame sweep of Portland. The last time UC Riverside took four games from an opponent in the same series was at Hawai’i-Hilo from March 26-28, 2004. MARK ROBERTS WOULD BE PROUD The Highlanders won four straight games to start the season. The last time the Highlanders won more than four straight games was back in 2011, when they had two sevengame winning streaks.

PARK FACTORS Park Factors help put baseball statistics into context by identifying the impact a particular stadium has on offense and defense. The outfield dimensions, amount of foul ground territory, weather, etc. can all impact whether a stadium is a “pitcher’s” or “hitter’s” park. From 2010-2013, the Riverside Sports Complex played as a hitter’s park. It is, in fact, the best hitter’s park in the conference. Below are the 2009-12 Park Factors for all Big West Conference Teams. A Park Factor of 100 represents an average park in terms of runs scoring. A number greater than 100 benefits the offense, and a number smaller than 100 benefits the defense.
