Candidate Statement: It is an honor and a privilege to be nominated for the position of Director from the Great Lakes Region. After many years of service at the Institute level, I look forward to yet another opportunity to serve and the responsibilities the position brings with it. I am very enthusiastic about CSI’s potential to have a major impact on the construction industry, now and in the future. Since joining CSI in 1990, I’ve been fortunate to have been actively involved at Institute, Region, and Chapter levels. I served three terms as Grand Rapids Chapter President and served as President of the Great Lakes

Region following the Governance changes. I served the Institute Board as Director from Great Lakes for FY12-13 and am completing a term as Board Secretary. Over the years, I have chaired several Chapter Committees and Region Technical Committee, and have served a number of Institute Committees and Task Teams; including MasterFormat 1995 subcommittee; MasterFormat 2004 Task Team; MasterFormat Maintenance Task team; Integrated Information Initiative (III); Terminology Task Team; Jury of Fellows; and Technical Committee, which I Chaired for 3 years. During my tenure on the Board, I served as Liaison to Technical Committee, and on the Program Coordination Committee, Chairing in FY13. I served six years as CSI’s Liaison to the International Construction Information Society (ICIS). Current activities include: Liaison to the Omniclass Business Management Group; Liaison to buildingSMART Board of Direction; Institute Technical Committee, and Great Lakes Region Technical Chair. At Chapter level, I most recently served as Membership and Program Chair, and am currently Chapter Treasurer. I have been extremely interested in promoting the value of CSI to other construction industry organizations. I have been fortunate to have been in a position to do so through involvement in a number of industry initiatives. Many of these, like the Integrated Information Initiative were visionary at the time, but grew to become what today is Omniclass, BIM and buildingSMART. I Co-Chaired the original OmniClass Development Committee and remain active in Omniclass Work Groups. While most of my involvement with CSI has been in some way associated with Formats, my most satisfying involvement has been in promoting them through communication within and outside CSI. One small example is my “SpecThat” feature which began as Newsletter fodder and has now spread to Social Media. I was honored to be recognized with Fellowship in 2003, with citation for “…vision and leadership in the advancement of information technology applied to the construction process . . . and for tireless efforts in promoting these initiatives and CSI . . .” In 2005, I became the first non-Canadian to be honored with Honorary Membership in Construction Specifications Canada. It is an honor to be nominated as Director from the Great Lakes region. Remember to vote, and as you do, consider Gary L. Beimers, FCSI, CDT, CSC, SCIP, as your choice. With our support I will work hard to be an effective voice for our membership through approachable and accountable leadership. What leadership skills do you possess that you could apply as a member of CSI’s Board? Broad experience at successfully leading diverse groups of individuals (see above). What skills and experience make you uniquely qualified for the position for which you are a candidate? Having served previously on the Board as Director and as Secretary, experienced with the workings and responsibilities serving on the board brings; and therefore able to “hit the ground running”. Broad experience interacting with numerous organizations and entities within the AEC community. What do you think should be changed about CSI or what changes would you make? What shouldn’t change about CSI? Significant changes have begun as a result of our recent governance changes. I was pleased to have been a part of the Board that implemented the change process, and would like to help firmly establish the new policy governance model.

What do you see as critical to CSI’s future success? Relevant and beneficial member experiences as they interact with CSI.
