GEOPHYSICIST #ExplorationGeophysicist #Seismologist You’re the math-centric member of geoscientists who study the physics of the earth. In the oil and gas industry, you work hand in hand with Geologists, Geochemists and Engineers to conduct drilling, mining or environmental programs. You study the structure, the composition and processes of the earth to locate, identify and extract oil and gas, minerals and groundwater. A Geologist might focus on geochemistry or the properties of the earth below the surface. Your focus is in calculating things like magnetics, resistivity, gravity and velocity of sound waves.

What does this career look like? As a Geophysicist, you can specialize in areas such as petroleum exploration and development, mining, environmental or earth physics. Within these disciplines, you could serve as an Acquisition Geophysicist, Processing Geophysicist or Interpretation Geophysicist.

4 Acquisition Geophysicists are more hands on with data-capturing technologies like seismographs and magnetometers. 4 Processing Geophysicists take that underground image and sharpen it with advanced mathematical calculations. 4 Usually embedded in oil and gas companies, Interpretation Geophysicists interpret the data and provide recommendations on how to most efficiently get oil or gas out of the ground.

What would I do?

HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary degree is generally required by employers. A master’s or doctoral degree may be preferred by some employers. • Geophysicists can register with a provincial or territorial association of professional geoscientists following graduation from an accredited educational program and after several years of work experience (in some provinces an exam is required) • Licensing and registration with a professional geoscientists association is mandatory to work in Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING Health and Safety courses would depend on locations and activity, but the following often apply. • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • H2S Alive

You use different methods to shed light on the earth’s structure. Seismic exploration, for example, is a deep imaging technique, which measures sound waves transmitted through rock. Depending on the type of Geophysicist you are, daily activities might include:

4 Assisting geologists with identifying natural gas, oil or underground water resources and interpreting survey results. 4 Analyzing and interpreting geophysical information from sources such as geophysical survey data, well logs or aerial photos. 4 Assessing the size, orientation and composition of mineral ore bodies and oil and gas deposits. 4 Preparing geophysical maps, cross-sectional diagrams or reports concerning the results of field surveys. 4 Planning geophysical field studies or surveys used to collect data for research or applications.
