Prairie shop quilts Winter Class Schedule January—March 2013

Learn How to Long Arm Your Own Quilts Long Arm Training—The Basics of Long Arm Quilting January 9, 14, 15, 16, 28 or 30 from 10 am to 11:30 am February 5, 11, 13, 18, 19 or 25 from 10 am to 11:30 am January 7 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm February 4 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm March 5, 7, 19, 20, 25 or 27 from 10 am to 11:30 am March 4 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm If you haven’t taken a turn on our very own Gammill Long Arm, Lucille, now is your chance. Students can sign up with a friend for a group session (just two students) or a one-on-one private lesson with instructor Cindy Krelle as she shows students how to wind bobbins, thread Lucille and load a quilt. Then she instructs students on various techniques for finishing quilts including free motion, meander and more. Each class is 1 1/2 hours long and a half hour of “play”. Please note: All students must complete Long Arm Training before renting Lucille. Rental fees for Lucille are $30 per hour (for the first and second time you rent/$20 per hour for all rentals thereafter).

Quilting With Pantographs on the Long Arm Scheduled By Appointment (1 1/2 hour class) Once you’ve learned the basics of Long Arm Quilting and have quilted a few quilts, you will want to advance your skills and techniques by learning pantograph quilting. Pantographs are edge to edge, continuous line designs that are “traced” onto your quilt using a laser light. No thought required, just a steady hand! Once you’ve quilted with a pantograph, you’ll be finishing quilt top after quilt top with the look of a professional!

Class Fee: $45 private lessons

Get it done at PSQ! UFO’s—Unfinished Objects Fridays, January 4 and 18, February 1 and 15, March 1 and 15 from 6 pm to 11 pm Be afraid, be very afraid. Are they lurking in the closet of your sewing room? Are they sneaking out from under your bed? “They” are all of the UnFinished Objects or UFOs that we all seem to have, and they are multiplying. Pre-registration is required (space is limited) and it’s FREE. Just bring a snack to share and enjoy 5 hours of uninterrupted sewing time (you may come and go as you please) with your fellow quilters and end the spread of UFO’s in your home!

Per Class Fee: $0 IT’S FREE

“Anything Goes”

Thursdays, January 17, February 7 or March 21 from 2 pm to 5 pm OR from 6 pm to 9 pm Formerly known as “Pick Your Project” this class assists students who need a little extra help with a project or want to start a new project. You decide what to work on, sew at your own pace, learn with guidance, and build relationships with others who share a passion for quilting. Anything Goes is now offered in the afternoon or evening!

How Do I Work This Thing??? Sunday, January 13 from 12 pm to 3 pm If you have a new sewing machine, a machine you inherited OR one that has never come out of the box because as much as you wanted it, you just don’t know how to work it, then let Claudia show you all the great things your machine can do! Bobbin winding, threading, cleaning, using all those great stitches and more. This class is HIGHLY recommended for students interested in taking The Basics class. Learn all the things your sewing machine can do!

Baby’s Play Tag Friday, March 8 from 1 pm to 5 pm A stroller-size quilt any baby will love to explore. Fun and function is what this adorable quilt provides by sewing ribbon and rickrack loops into the blocks. Makes a great baby gift.

The “Burrito” Pillowcase Sunday, March 10 from 1 pm to 3 pm Pillowcases are fun, easy and give you instant gratification! And, once you learn the “Burrito” method of making a pillowcase, you’ll want to make them all day long. This easy method encloses all seams and is so fast and easy ANYBODY can do it. This class is perfect for kids, too (with a parent’s assistance).

Lone Star Tuesdays, February 19 and 26 from 1 pm to 4 pm Learn how to make a beautiful Lone Star quilt with the easiest technique—foundation piecing with Quilt Smart! Achieve perfect points and accurate seams every time!

Bargello Color Wheel Thursdays, March 7 and March 14 from 6 pm to 9 pm Create this eye catching wall hanging by designer Cheryl Phillips. The design swirls from one 27” circle to another with no break in color making a figure eight of color. There are 4 color family options given in the pattern. The sample is the Color Wheel. You will also learn to appliqué the center and learn a quick way to make bias binding.

4 Patch Posie Thursdays, February 28 and March 28 from 6 pm to 9 pm Transform a focus or novelty fabric into a 4-patch kaleidoscope quilt that will have you looking for other fabrics that you can use to make another 4-patch posie creation. Many different options for setting the blocks will be taught including “on point” with alternate blocks, “straight sets” with sashing and log cabin blocks. So many fun and creative options are open to this quilt.

Shadow Box Saturdays, March 2 and 23 from 1 pm to 4 pm Shadowbox makes a stunning 3-D effect that is forgiving and uses big prints to advantage. I will also demonstrate a 2-sided binding (using 2 fabrics to best match the colors on each side of the quilt).

Techniques The Basics

Sundays, January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17 and March 3 from 12 pm to 4 pm Mondays, January 28, February 4, 11, 25, March 4 and 11 from 1 pm to 5 pm Learn the basic techniques of quilting that will give each student a solid foundation to use as a spring board to more complicated projects. Students will make a sampler quilt of 16 different blocks while learning numerous techniques and building a wealth of quilting knowledge. Students who take this class will have learned the skills to tackle just about any quilting technique. The Basics is an excellent opportunity to start at the beginning no matter how long you’ve been quilting. And now there is a weekday option too!

Binding 101 Sunday, February 24 from 12 pm to 3 pm Your top is pieced, the borders added, the quilt is quilted… now what? We will cover the basics of binding in this three-hour class. We will cover how to trim a quilt for binding, how to make straight grain and bias binding and how to attach the binding to the quilt with perfect mitered corners. Extras include that wonderful flange of fabric under the binding that adds so much punch. We are hoping that after this class, binding may be your favorite part of the quilt-making process!

Binding 201 Sunday, March 24 from 1 pm to 4 pm If you’ve mastered the basics of binding, are ready to conquer some more advanced technique, we have the class for you. In this class we will explore fusible binding, two fabric reversible binding, flanges and piping. We will sew samples that include rick rack and lace and also will try a variety of prairie points. Come join us and learn some great new techniques for finishing the edges of your quilt.

Hand Quilting Sunday, March 17 from 12 pm to 3 pm Hand Quilting is truly a timeless technique that all quilters should learn. Even if you are a die-hard machine quilter, some quilts just beg for the elegance and simplicity of this wonderful, ageless technique.

Blocks of the Month and Quilt CluBs Applique Affair

Saturdays, January 5, February 2 from 1 pm to 3 pm Saturday, March 2 from 10 am to 12 pm A beautiful Block of the Month, Applique Affair will challenge and delight any lover of applique. If you already know how to applique, start collecting your fabrics and join us for a wonderful month by month of beautiful applique!

Star Struck

Saturdays, January 12, February 9 and March 9 from 9 am to 1 pm (this Block of the Month will be held every second Saturday throughout 2013) This monthly class is an adventure in making many different stars of different sizes and options to set them into a quilt. Join the fun and camaraderie of this monthly class.

Modern Quilt Club

Saturdays, January 12, February 9 and March 9 from 1 pm to 5 pm (this Club will be held every second Saturday throughout 2013) Explore Modern Quilting by producing beautiful stylish quilts that will fit into your modern OR traditional life. This class will introduce new challenges, thoughtful fabric selection and work on precision piecing. Each quilt has a coordinated, pieced back that adds versatility and interest. Join us each month for new and exciting quilt projects.

Add an applique center to finish this heirloom quilt. A great opportunity to meet other quilters and form a bond of friendship while creating a beautiful quilt!
