GETTING SHIT DONE in 2017 - Artist Version The Get Shit Done-System(GSD) in Trello is used to achieve focus as well as productivity every single day. If you love playing games like me, you will love this system. Being inside of Trello is just like being inside a "game". In fact, Trello will replace gaming. I have modified the system to fit for the artist. It is used by highly successful people at the Fastlaneforum. You can find the original by LightHouse here. I recommend you give it a thorough read as well. Now, let´s dive into it...

STEP 1: Setting up Trello Trello is the best software for the GSD-system, because you can move tasks around and basically put them in a "trophy"-box once it´s finished. This will give you a feeling of accomplishment every time you finish something. Luckily, finished tasks aren´t scattered all over the place anymore(like in notebooks). Set-up your Trello Board like this(you can use browser, mobile app, or windows app):

I will explain each of these lists in the next steps..

STEP 2: Define Long-Term Goal Your long-term goal is the pivot point, everything you do revolves around. It is important to write it down, so that you are constantly reminded of it. A long-term goal can be from 5-10 years. This is the length, in which you can truly achieve something substantial. Many people overestimate the short term and underestimate the long-term. A major component of your goal is the deadline. It allows you to plan as well add pressure. The deadline is just an estimate though, and you should never worry too much about it not being met. Just set a new deadline and continue.

#1: A long-term goal can be: -Become Art Director at AAA Game Company -100k/year income -Publish 5 Artbooks -Founding a Game Company See, how the goals are measurable and focused. "Become as good as Craig Mullins" is not measurable. "Become as good as Sargent" is not measurable.

#2: I like to define short-term goals and any milestones as projects: -Create 10 pieces portfolio consisting of fantasy illustration -Create 3D portfolio consisting of 10 pieces -Get a Concept Art Job -Get 5 Freelance Gigs/Month Make sure that the projects support your major goal. Just prioritize one of those and FOCUS on it. The more specific your goal, the better. Start with Project 1 and only tackle Project 2, when Project 1 is finished.

You will learn about prioritization in STEP 3.

STEP 3: Your Inbox Your Inbox consists of TO-DOs that you come up with throughout the day, or when planning. TO-DOs that take less than 3 seconds should be done immediately.

#1: For example... -Learn Graphic Design -Practice Storyboarding Skills -Read Fundamentals of Painting -Create Portfolio -Create Action Plan -Go Plein-Air Painting -Practice Composition -Material Study -Practice Drawing Fundamentals -Apply Loomis Did you see a task, that says "Play Overwatch"? Me neither. You see how effective it is?

#2: Prioritize those TO-DOs from hot to cold. The most important task being hot and the least important task being cold. This will allow you to avoid doing things, that are unimportant. For example, if you want to create a fantasy illustration portfolio, you should focus on your drawing skills as opposed to learning 3D programs.

So a priority list from hot to cold might look like this:

Your inbox tasks from hot to cold.

STEP 4: Today(MAX 3)

#1: Define an MIT(most important task) every day. Ideally this task takes more or less 4h to complete. Ask yourself: "Would I be happy, if it´s the only task I achieve today?". Imagine starting your MIT at 6 am. At 12 am you are finished. If you want you can have the rest of the day off!! How awesome is that?

#2: You can put 2 more tasks into the Today-list, but they will have lesser importance. Don´t put more than 3 in total, because the goal is to be focused. Remember? In case those 2 tasks get accomplished as well, you can still add new cards into the list fluidly.

The MIT is the most important task for the day. Notice, that the second task requires less brain power. The next High Priority-Task should be done the next day. The third task can be something that is urgent, but is a very small task(for example writing e-mails)

STEP 5: Wait/In-Progress Sometimes you have to wait to continue a task. For example, waiting for a reply from a company, or waiting for your book purchase to arrive. Don´t get stuck wasting your day waiting, and put it into the Wait/In-Progress list.

STEP 6: Finished(Archive) Once finished with a task, put it in here. Finished!

STEP 7: Someday/Maybe This is a list of things you want to do, but don´t know when to do it yet. Just put it in here, so you don´t forget about it.
