Happy New Year! I know it is just now December. Last Sunday was the first Sunday in Advent and that day begins a new liturgical year for our church. A new church year where we will spend quite a bit of time studying the Gospel of Luke, our patron saint here at St. Luke’s. Advent is an important time in the church calendar. It is a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming.” Advent begins the church year, starting four Sundays before Christmas. The season of Advent has been set aside as a time of preparation for Christmas since the 6th century. Advent is a time for selfexamination and asking for forgiveness as the church is preparing for Christ’s Second Coming even as it prepares for Christmas. Advent is about Christ coming twice. As the incarnate God at Christmas and as the Messiah who comes with power and great glory at the end of this age. This is a time comparable to Lent, the season of self-examination preceding Easter. During Advent you will notice some changes in our worship service. The Gloria will be replaced with the Trisagion and we will omit the “Alleluia” responses after The Breaking of the Bread and the dismissal. This is done to reflect the more somber mood of Advent, in anticipation of the joyous celebration of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I encourage you to carve-out some time from your busy preparations for Christmas to reflect on what it means to us all that Jesus Christ became incarnate and lived among us. And he will come again. I want to thank each of you who have turned in your pledges for next year. Your generous support for our parish is crucial to our ministry here at St. Luke’s. If you have not turned in your pledge yet, it is not too late! Prayerfully consider what you can contribute to support our parish. The vestry is preparing the budget for next year and needs to know what to expect from your pledge. I was so glad to see we have an Angel Tree here. I was so happy to see that after just one Sunday, all the angels had been spoken for! What a generous show of support for the children in need here in our community. Congratulations for your generosity! Plans are under way for our Christmas Eve worship services. Any of our youth who will be here, please let us know where we can plan our celebration at our worship service. All are invited to participate! Let Frances, Charlotte, or me know as soon as possible. Have a blessed and holy Advent, and then, a very, merry, Christmas! I love you, David December 2015

Please Help Us Support the Angel Tree St. Luke’s will be sponsoring an Angel Tree this year. It will be in the back of the church beginning November 29. Please help as much as you are able. Contact Cindy Ham with any questions.

Dear St. Luke’s, Dale & I wanted to express our gratitude for the many people from St. Luke’s who helped us during our move. From the loaning of a vehicle, to packing the Pods, to running donations to the ReStore, and even to moving our trash out to the curb after we left, we were surrounded by so much love and support. Thank you for welcoming us as family, you will forever be in our hearts! ~Christine and Dale December 2015

The Real Santa

Nicholas, the young man who lived with his uncle. "Nicholas, it is you! Thank you for helping us—I hardly know what to say!" Nicholas said, "Please, do not thank me—thank God that your prayers have been answered. Do not tell others about me."

The real Santa lived a long time ago in a place called Asia Minor. It is now the country of Turkey. His name was Nicholas. Nicholas' parents died when he was just a teenager. His parents left him a lot of money which made him a rich young man. He went to live with his uncle who was a priest. Nicholas heard about a man who had lost all his money. He had three daughters who were old enough to get married. But in those days young women had to have money in order to get married. This money was a "dowry" and it was used to help the new family get started. If you didn't have dowry money, you didn't get married.

Nicholas continued helping people. He always tried to help secretly. He didn't want any attention or thanks. Years passed and he was chosen to be a bishop. Bishops look after their people as shepherds look after their sheep. And that is what Nicholas did. When there wasn't any food, he found wheat; so no one went hungry. He always helped people in trouble. All his life Nicholas showed people how to love God and care for each other.

Everyone loved Nicholas. After he died, they told stories of the good and kind things Nicholas had done. Sailors took these stories about Nicholas This family was so poor they had nothing left to eat. everywhere they went.
