Roller Coaster Ride
It seems like our ladies team was like a roller coaster ride this week. At the end of the meet last Saturday, we were a little disappointed with narrowly missing second place and it was like being at the bottom of the hill and climbing up. Then a day later we find out that we were actually second after an error was discovered in the scoring, and we’re flying down the hill full of adrenaline. Then a week later we’re down at the bottom of another hill as we had several teammates out with various injuries, illnesses, and a test. But the three ladies that did compete gave excellent performances, with two of the three amigos establishing career bests in their race and earning some pretty cool, wearable awards. The ladies looked as if they were riding in the same car in the rollercoaster as they traversed the track (or in our case, the trail) together throughout the race. The boys’ varsity road half the roller coaster ride together while competing in their race, as they accomplished our goal of getting to the 1.5 mile mark as a pack. If we continue to train as a pack and establish a faster base pace on Tuesday and Thursday practices, we’ll be in connecting cars at the front of the coaster together, and we will give ourselves a chance to get the thrill of a lifetime by riding the coaster that ends at the state championship. It’s one of the longest coaster rides out there, and the ride certainly has its share of ups and downs, and some of you might get a little sick on the ride (Zach), but it could end up becoming one of your favorite, most thrilling rides ever. Don’t fear the ride.
(Don’t) Be Bored, Man
This week we will travel to compete at the Boardman Invitational in Youngstown. This meet is a large race in terms of the number of teams and runners that you will have the opportunity to compete with. This can be a huge advantage, as it is rare to find those “no man’s land” gaps in the race, so you should always be near someone (hopefully that someone is a teammate as you work together). Be sure to pull off of the people you compete with and use the “ladder” to continuously move up in places during your race. Stay to the outside (and on the correct side so you can run the shortest course) to avoid being boxed in during the race. It’s important to get out to a strong start, so we’ll work on this during our intervals on Wednesday.
Harrier of the Week
For week three, let’s congratulate JUILIA DiBEASE and JOEY where for art thou ROMEO for their performances at Walsh and during the week. Juilia hung tough with teammates Jackie and Ava as she helped to form a formidable pack. Her grit and determination enabled her to establish a new personal best time despite the less than ideal conditions. Joey set a big PR at Walsh as he turned in a performance worthy of a Shakespeare novel. His nearly one-minute reduction over his previous best time was a result of a great week of practice and a very strong last half mile on Saturday. Congratulations to both of you.
