Travel Program Update
TRAVEL MISSION To provide structured and developmentally appropriate coaching for all players. The long term development of our players is paramount, with the program focusing on creating competitive, technically sound, tactically aware, physically able and psychologically alert players in a safe, positive and fun environment within the travel level soccer community.
GHSC DEVELOPMENTAL PHILOSOPHY • Develop well rounded soccer players in an appropriate environment which teaches the GHSC core values. • Create an environment for all players to play with expression, creativity and to play the correct way rather than impose restrictions and strict tactics on our players. • Focus on the longevity of a player’s development, as opposed to short-term results and performances. • Encourage and emphasize the core soccer attributes of technique and ball mastery above physical attributes. • Provide a learning environment where all levels of players will enjoy their soccer experience.
Who we are as a Travel Program • We are a town program:
o Still one of, if not the, largest town soccer clubs in New England o 28 travel/premier teams and over 400 players • 22 travel teams U9-U14/15 • 5 spring high school travel teams • 1 premier soccer team. o Local kids, local fields, local families
• We are a volunteer-run organization
o We have hundreds of wonderful volunteers/coaches who make the club what is. o We have one full-time paid staff member, paid seasonal trainers and one part-time club administrator.
• We offer an incredible value and have invested heavily in player/coach development at little, if any, cost to members o In many cases comparable to or better than what you might get elsewhere
Who we are NOT as a Travel Program • We are NOT a for-profit enterprise
o Other than DOC, we do not have full-time, paid staff working on Club matters o We do not focus on strategies for generating revenue
• We do NOT aspire to compete with Elite/US Development Academy programs
o We support and encourage players destined to play at this high level to go to these clubs.
• We are NOT focused solely on short term, win-at-allcosts, strategies. • We do NOT look to attract players from other clubs
o However, we are interested in retaining our local players, or at least aiding them and their families in making choices about where to play.
Issues we face • Youth soccer in CT (and nationally) has changed dramatically over the past several years. o A dramatic expansion of premier/professional programs in CT. • For-profit enterprises with paid staff • Targeting players in non-profit, town programs
• Changes mandated from US Youth Soccer • Age Change • Field/Team sizes
• Hartwell has seen increasing attrition as its players are lured to these programs. o We are a non-profit, volunteer-run, town soccer organization o Resources constrained by our structure and charter
• Perception among members
o Premier/professional programs are better o Hartwell has no plan
Hartwell Travel Strategic Plan o Invest heavily in increased professional training and coach education. o Identified need for more structured/analytical approach to player development to enhance player skills and team competitiveness. o One of the few clubs in the state with a full-time Director of Coaching to oversee player/coach development o Implemented 4v4 program ahead of US Soccer mandate. We have done it for 6 years. • 4v4 program for U9 through U11 and began transition to 3:1 practice/game ratio o Developed Club Curriculum for age-based player development o Enforced licensing requirement for all head coaches and offered supplemental training and education programs throughout the year o Began focusing on K-2 “rec” program as incubator of travel talent pool o Assess progress and plan and analyzed against state of CT youth soccer o Implemented U.S. Soccer’s birth year and field size mandates
Hartwell Travel Strategic Plan o Travel Soccer: • Player centered model. • Academy style practices with Blue/White/Red teams with a professional lead for U9-U11. • Dedicated age group trainers • 3:1 practice/game ratio more stringently enforced: o 4v4’s continue for U9,U10 and U11’s o Small-sided games and tactical practices strongly encouraged for U12-14 • Development clinics with professionals offered as a 3rd practice a week o Premier Soccer: • 3:1 practice/game ratio more stringently enforced: • Increased trainer support for player development and coach education. • Winter Program. 14 sessions indoors with Professional Trainer.
