But in reality and from surveys, we know that it is otherwise. According to Maslow‟s Hierarchy of Needs theory, low-level needs such as physiological requirements and safety must be satisfied before higher-level needs such as self-fulfillment are pursued. In this respect, an employment has to meet the Safety needs by providing financial (salary) and job security before anything

1. What exactly does competitive salary mean? "Competitive Salary" differs from location to location and from profession to profession. What it means is a salary that "compares favorably" to what other employers are paying, in the same general location and the same kind of job at the same level of seniority.

Data was sourced from the JobStreet.com database. The spectrum here indicates the key specializations where demand for professionals is growing. Based on the data above, we may contend that we are competitive, but we shouldn‟t ignore the fact that Singapore is paying almost 100% more than us. The geographical proximity, culture similarity and language commonality will further fuel the motivation for our local talent to work there. Even if we try to source talent from across the world to fill the gap, we will find that it is difficult to import these talent, due to a lack of salary competitiveness.

GLOBAL TALENT WAR: Winning The Global War for Talent — Are You Ready? 3. So, how does salary information help me in my talent sourcing? a. Entering salary information will help you manage the quality of applications: You don‟t want to waste time screening or interviewing candidates with salary expectations that are out of your range. b. Displaying salary information will help you attract jobseekers who wouldn‟t otherwise apply: From our survey we found out that 48% of the candidates will not apply for a job unless they know the salary information. These are the “Passive” jobseekers who are currently in a comfortable job and not in a hurry to change jobs, unless they are very certain that the prospect is better.

5. What else can I do if I cannot remunerate competitively as compared with the Best-inclass organizations? Remember Maslow‟s Hierarchy of Needs Theory? Financial security is just one of the Safety Needs. If you cannot compete with them, take an alternative route. You can still win the race by focusing on the job security aspect of the Safety Needs.

4. How do I insert the salary information in my job advertisement? Simply specify a minimum figure and a maximum figure for the specific job, and you will have a viable salary range that‟s good to go. Please see sample illustration.

RECOMMENDATION 1. Statistics tell that jobs with salary information have 20% more applications when compared with jobs without it.

Not sure about the salary information? Please use our

Salary Report to refer to the present market rate for the position you are posting.

2. Otherwise, you can apply the FAIDA selling format: Findable, Attention, Interest, Desire, Action when creating your advertisements. Refer to March 11 Recruitment Insight for clear guidelines. Do you find the information on this page useful?
