What do you REALLY want?

A goal is something you want! A goal is something you are willing to work for – whether it takes you days, weeks, months, or years to achieve. ◦ Goals Work! ◦ Not enough people have them ◦ You can be someone who does have goals – a Goal Getter

“The future is there for those that take it.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Exploring your dreams and wishes – even the ones that seem impossible and out of reach – helps you begin to design the future you want. Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” Listen to what you have to say. Maybe you have an answer right away or maybe you don’t. Either way, it is time to dig deeper – what do you long for and wish for yourself – and why?

What do I enjoy doing? Why? What don’t I enjoy doing? Why? What do I like to read about? What gives meaning and purpose to my life? What are my talents or skills? How might I improve them? What do I most often daydream about? When you are daydreaming – ask yourself exactly what you want to do with your life now and in the future – anything is possible!

You’ve asked yourself what you really want, you’ve looked at your wishes, hopes, and dreams. How do you get from where you are today to a tomorrow where what you want has a chance of happening? TAKE ACTION! – Your goals are the “how to” process for reaching your dreams. Start with the short-term and head to the long-term.

1.

Positive

2.

Personal

Phrase your goals positively to feel good about what you are trying to accomplish. Example – “Practice my jump shot for twenty minutes at least three days this week to improve my skills” sounds better than “Practice my jump shot, so I don’t look like a loser on the court.” Your goals must be meaningful to you. They have to reflect your dreams and values; therefore ensuing to motivate you to reach them.

3.

Possible

Consider what’s actually possible and what’s within your control. You have a greater chance of success.

Goal – what you want to accomplish (something significant and ambitious) Plan – the path you will take to reach your goal (must include specific details) Action – the outline of actual steps you will take to make your plan a reality

“To fail to plan is to plan to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin

I – Initiative

S – Stamina

E – Enthusiasm

◦ Do you have what it takes? Will you stick with it even if it gets hard? ◦ Be there, do it! Do not wait for someone else to do it for you. ◦ It’s all about perseverance. Hang in there! Just take it one step at a time. ◦ Wanted: motivation, energy, the support of others…positive attitude!

List your good qualities Appreciate what you have Do one thing that you consider healthy Remember compliments Let go of worries Do something nice for someone else

Learning to recognize your own strengths and good qualities is important. Write a letter to yourself, acknowledging all of your positive traits. Then when you need a lift, read it.
