Explore:: 8:45 – 9:10 / 10:45 – 11:10 (25 min.) Invite children to participate at the Focus Station. Explore the materials with the children and engage them in open-ended questions about their observations. This will encourage them to explore and form questions on their own throughout the lesson.
Focus Station
Station 1: It All Works Together In this part of The Big God Story, Peter and John heal a lame beggar. This activity will allow children to think and talk about how all parts are necessary for puzzles, or our bodies to work the way they were designed. SUPPLIES (per table) • puzzles SET UP Set out the puzzles at the table. ENGAGE Welcome the children to the EXPLORE Station. Begin by asking the children what happens if a piece of a puzzle is missing. Is it fun to use a puzzle if one of the pieces is missing? Does the puzzle work the way it should? Encourage the children to think about all the physical activities they do with their bodies, and draw connections to how many parts that all work are needed. What kinds of activities do we do with our bodies each day? Interact with responses: walking, eating, brushing teeth, writing, drawing, running, etc. The different parts of our bodies allow us to do so many things throughout our day. But I wonder what it would be like if parts of our body were missing, or did not work. What if I couldn’t use my legs, or if I couldn’t see. Allow children to think and respond. To extend this discussion you could challenge the children in the following activities: go to the other side of the room without using their legs, and draw a simple picture while closing their eyes. Let’s try doing some of the activities you mentioned without using some of our body parts. When the children are finished with their challenges, ask them about their experience. Was it easy or difficult? Did you like not being able to use your legs? How did your picture turn out? What would it feel like to not be able to see what you’re doing? Our bodies are like the puzzles with many pieces working all together to work the way they were designed to.
Station 2: Coin Toss The beggar in today’s story was dependant on the generosity of others. He asked Peter and John for money, but Peter gave him something much better! This activity will help children focus on the miracle of God’s power. SUPPLIES • coins • basket / bucket • tape

3.9 SET UP Place basket or bucket a few feet away from tape line. If necessary, clear an open space for children to be able to move about. ENGAGE Explain to the children, Long ago people whose legs did not work had to depend on the generosity of others for all the things they needed. They would often ask for money. Let’s try and toss these coins into the basket / bucket. Show the children how to stand behind the tape and toss in the coins. Say The beggar ask Peter and John for money, but they gave him something much better! Peter healed the man in the name of Jesus Christ, so the man could walk! Would you like to have money or legs to run and play? Peter could heal the man because God is powerful! Encourage children to take turns tossing the coins into the bucket.
Station 3: Sequence Blocks This activity will help children order and remember the sequence of events of today’s story. SUPPLIES • story blocks ENGAGE As the children arrive, invite them to join you at the table. This is an opportunity to introduce today’s story. Tell the children, In today’s story we will hear how Peter and John meet a beggar on the way to prayer (block 1) Peter had no money to give, but instead Peter said to the man in the name of Jesus of Nazareth - walk (block 2). Then the man got up leaping and praising God (block 3). Discuss the pictures on the blocks, and how they tell the story. Encourage the children to put the blocks in order as they retell the story.

Respond:: 9:45-10:05/11:45-12:05 (20 min.) Your small group time is designed to encourage conversations between you and your children about what God is doing in them. Some children will be more responsive when they’re engaged in something artistic. Others will be more open once their bodies get moving. Choose from the options given here or use your own ideas. The WONDER QUESTIONS may be used to start conversations during any of these activities or in a quieter, more contemplative time.
Create: A Caring Hand SUPPLIES (per table/small group) • card stock • paint • wipes • paintbrushes • paint shirts ENGAGE Think about a part of The Big God Story you heard today. Peter was a helper for Jesus. Peter used his love of Jesus to help the beggar. Today we will make a hand print picture to help us remember we can share Jesus’ love too. Pass out the card stock and have five or six children at a time paint their right hand. Have the children press their painted hand onto the paper. God created us to live together in community with one another. He wants us to help each other. Even the disciples worked in pairs. For example, think of Peter and John working together in today’s part of The Big God Story! Can you give an example of a time you helped someone?
Connect: Hop Hop Hop SUPPLIES (per small group) • hoops (3-4) ENGAGE Gather your small group in an open space. Friends, today we heard about the beggar who couldn’t walk his entire life, but was healed by God’s power. What do you think he did with his legs once he was able use them again? Allow children to respond. Yes, he probably walked, ran, jumped, and used his legs happily! We’re going to use our legs and bodies right now too! Engage the children in different movement activities using the hoops. Feel free to come up with your own ideas. Ideas for hoop activities: Create a hopscotch on the ground and have the kids hop through. They can try with both feet or on one foot. Have a few kids hold the hoops vertically while the other kids crawl their way through. Let the kids spin the hoops on their arms. Pair up the kids and let them roll the hoop on the ground toward one another. Hold the hoop 6 inches above the ground and let them jump in and out.

3.9 Wonder Questions In The Big God Story today, Peter met a crippled man. Because Peter trusted in God, God used Peter to heal the crippled man’s legs. God’s power changed everything! I wonder … How did Peter feel when he really noticed the man for the very first time? I wonder … How did the man feel when God’s power healed his legs? I wonder … How will God use His power in me?

Small Group Leaders Today, send your little ones out with a blessing by praying Scripture over them. The time of blessing is an opportunity for children to practice another physical posture of worship. Read the Remember Verse over the children and then close your time with a prayer of blessing. (You may choose to read through the Scripture more than once as God’s Spirit leads you.) Gather your small group in a circle and have everyone hold hands. Lead the children in saying the following line of blessing: May you know that God is with you always! Have the children say their line of blessing in the circle formation as they look around at one another. The leader can finish the time of blessing with the following: May your hearts and eyes be open to see the people in your neighborhood who need God’s power to help them. May you hear God’s voice when He speaks to you, and may you respond to what He says.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. Colossians 3:23a The Power of Blessing Use this time to allow both volunteer leaders and parents to participate in blessing each child before they conclude their time together. Invite parents into the time of blessing at the end of the service, and encourage them to continue to bless their children throughout the week.
