Goodwill Walla Walla Walla Walla, WA 20,484 square feet Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Inc. approached the firm with the task to breathe new life into their Walla Walla retail location and grow its consumer appeal in the community. The Goodwill mission of “seeing value in everything” inspired the design team to give the building back to the community by restoring its historic character, thus enhancing the downtown streetscape. This 20,000 square-foot renovation includes two retail areas, a warehouse, a merchandise-sorting room, a lunch room and a new mezzanine for offices. The team elevated the shopping experience by transforming the store into an inviting environment. They restored its natural beauty by introducing innovative daylighting techniques and stripping all excess materials from the building—revealing original brick walls, vaulted ceilings and wooden trusses. Natural light floods the interior by way of the new custom glass curtain wall located on the façade. Contemporary fluorescent uplights and pendant lighting were installed under a painted white stripe, which is mirrored by a strip of steel installed in the floor. This technique reflects the light and further brightens the space. Moreover, this reflecting system orients the shopper by its placement along the spine of the store, and creates a visual harmony. Sustainable strategies were also used throughout the design of this building, and served as cost-efficient solutions. The renovated façade is a structural fiberglass window system created from engineered wood and insulated glazing units set in sealant—creating excellent thermal performance. The dressing rooms and cash wraps were built from reclaimed materials that were removed from the building during construction. This subtractive method served the dual purpose of creating a raw and open aesthetic while minimizing the amount of building materials.
