What is the Bible?
!
The Bible is God’s message to us. Actually, the Bible is not just one book but a collection of many books that have been put together. It came to be called the Book because it is so important, because it is God’s book. The word Bible means “book.” Sometimes people talk about the ‘Canon’ of Scripture. (That is not to be confused with a cannon that blows things up!) ‘Canon’ is originally a Greek word that means measuring rod or ruler. So how does this help us to understand how to use the Bible?

WEDNESDAY When was the Bible made?
God wrote the Bible over many, many years, a long time ago - long before computers, cars, and even before books! The people who wrote down God’s words used scrolls of paper made from papyrus leaves and animal skin. They wrote over a period of 1,500 years, from the time of Moses to the Apostle John.
! !

Did the Bible Stories Really Happen?
!
!
“Aren’t they just nice stories and fairy tales?”
CHECK OUT Proverbs 3:5 & 6
This might be a question your friends have asked you. But you can confidently tell them, “Yes, the stories in the Bible really happened.” Some of the events seem crazy to us - and they are amazing because they are miracles ... but they still happened. We know that the stories are true because the Bible is God’s Word, and God wouldn’t lie to us or fool us.Some people don’t believe the Bible because they haven’t read it. Some don’t believe it because they don’t think miracles happen. Others don’t believe because they don’t want to; they don’t want to learn about God and do what He tells them to do. But we know that God can do anything, and He’s the best one to tell us how to live.

Why is the Bible in two parts instead of just one part?
The Bible has two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament tells the story of the beginning of the world and the beginning of the nation of Israel. It also tells about how the people of Israel obeyed and disobeyed God over many, many years. All of the stories and messages from God in the Old Testament lead up to Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of God’s promise.
!
The New Testament tells the story of Christ, the early Christians, the beginning of the church and what is going to happen in the future. You can think of the OT and NT as “before Christ” and “after Christ.” Old does not mean out-of-date ... it just means before Jesus. But remember, even though the Bible has two parts, it is still one book - God’s book!
!
How many books make up the Old Testament? _________ How many books make up the New Testament? __________ How many books are in the whole Bible? ______

!Why are there four books about ! Jesus in the Bible?
!
The books about Jesus are called the Gospels and they tell us about Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection. God used four books because each book tells the story from a different point of view. Each one shows us something different about Jesus. When we read all the Gospels, we see the whole picture. It is like seeing a house from all four sides. The four stories about Jesus are all named after the men who wrote them down: Matthew - was a tax collector who became one of Jesus’ disciples Mark - was a friend of the twelve disciples Luke - was a doctor John - was a fisherman who also became one of the twelve disciples
!
God inspired each of these men to write about Jesus’ life. John points out something quite interesting:
