Training contracts A guide to our trainee solicitor recruitment
A message from our Training Principal
Tonia Secker Once you’ve decided to pursue a career as a solicitor, the choice of where you train is one of the biggest and most influential career decisions you will make. Not simply because it is where you will spend the two years of your training contract, but also because it is the place where you have the potential to forge a successful long-term career. No two firms are alike. Even if they operate in the same sector, their cultures, work practices and strategies will be very different, not to mention their diverse and often exotic office locations. Choosing between them can be a real challenge. When I chose to accept a training contract at Trowers & Hamlins, the things that were important to me were: ■■
A successful and energetic mid-sized firm, which valued individualism and genuinely saw its trainees as a source of future senior associates and partners;
■■
A friendly, supportive and meritocratic culture that encouraged independent thought;
■■
Interesting, high quality work that I could get directly involved in, whilst learning from colleagues who were expert in their respective fields; and
■■
The opportunity to spend time abroad.
These things remain equally important to me now both as a partner at the firm and as its Training Principal. I am delighted to say that our training contract still offers all of the above and more. I made absolutely the right choice in joining the firm as a trainee. It has lived up to my early expectations and, along the way, has given me the opportunity both to develop my career amongst some fantastic colleagues, and to work on intellectually challenging projects nationally and internationally. If you’re looking for a different kind of international law firm, want to help shape the future of communities and cities, and promote your clients’ businesses, we would be keen on hearing from you. I guarantee that a training contract with Trowers & Hamlins will give you real handson experience, will foster and develop your skills, and will not require you to spend six months at a photocopier.

Who are we? Welcome to our graduate recruitment brochure. As you read through this, we hope you find that our friendly, professional and successful culture underpins everything that we do, say and offer. With offices in London, Birmingham, Exeter, Manchester, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, Oman and Malaysia, we’re a full-service firm and advise a wide range of clients across a large number of arenas. No matter where our clients are, they have access to a connected network of lawyers across many disciplines, jurisdictions and sectors. Our clients operate in diverse industry segments such as real estate, construction, transport and infrastructure, banking and financial services, distribution and logistics, education and health, hotels and leisure, defence, engineering and surveying, charities, government, retail, and energy and natural resources. We also act for many high-net worth individuals. We are the number one firm in the UK when it comes to expertise in the housing world and are consistently ranked as one of the leading firms in the Middle East. We were also the first foreign law firm to secure a Qualified Foreign Law Firm licence in Malaysia. As a firm, our vision is to help businesses and governments change the way people live and work. We do this by providing commercial advice geared towards tackling the challenges our clients face. We are fascinated by the future of our towns and cities and especially, the point where commerce, communities and culture intersect. What sorts of people succeed here? Well, we are often described as pragmatic, approachable, and down-to-earth. We’re told that we are experts who can manage projects, relationships and change, brilliantly. Most gratifyingly, we often hear that we are the sort of people that our clients want to work with time and time again. We believe that the combination of how we think, as well as what we do and where we do it, make us different from other international law firms. We are a growing firm, but you won’t be anonymous. Combine all this with the excellent training that we offer, and we believe that we’re an outstanding prospect for any future trainee.
2
What are we looking for? We seek to recruit candidates whom we view as having the potential to forge a long-term career with the firm. Approximately a third of our partners trained with the firm - organic growth is important to us. We recruit around 23 trainees every year, split between September and March intakes. The majority of our trainees will be recruited for our London office, with a smaller number of trainees taken on in our Birmingham, Exeter and Manchester offices respectively. However, we expect our trainees to be ready to undertake seats in any of our national or international offices. Excellent academic results are essential. You should have a minimum of 320 UCAS points at A-Level (ABB or above) and a consistently strong predicted or achieved 2.1 degree. However, we also look for other attributes in our potential trainees. We look for individuals with: enthusiasm and a drive to succeed; teamworking skills (both as a leader and a player); good humour, resilience and strength of character; initiative and a sense of responsibility; an innovative approach and versatility; an analytical and logical mind; and excellent communication skills and the ability to adapt them to your audience. We welcome applications from both law and non-law graduates, and from those looking for a career change. Having a law degree is by no means essential to being a trainee solicitor with us – we recruit a healthy number of our future trainees every year from non-law backgrounds. It is also important to note that we are interested in applications from individuals across all walks of life. We are an organisation that fully embraces diversity - to us, it is about talent rather than background.
3
How will my training be structured? If you join us and have yet to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and/or the Legal Practice Course (LPC), you will need to complete your study at the University of Law and we will cover your course fee(s) in full. We will also provide you with a maintenance grant of either £6,500 (if you are undertaking your study in London) or £6,000 (outside of London) for each year of learning. In terms of the electives, we require our future trainees to undertake the following as part of the LPC MSc at the University of Law: ■■
Advanced real estate law and practice;
■■
Mergers and acquisitions law and practice; and
■■
Debt finance law and practice.
Your training contract will be divided into four six-month seats and you can expect to experience a broad range of departments over the course of the two-year period. You will be allocated a supervisor (who will be a senior lawyer within the firm) and you will be appraised every three months. This gives you a great opportunity to receive detailed feedback on your performance and allows us to see that you are developing at an appropriate pace. We believe in learning by experience. Throughout your training contract, you will be given responsibility and you will be challenged. You will have the opportunity to develop your commercial drafting and negotiation skills, and will be able to enhance your communication skills - whether as a result of real client contact or simply through liaising with partners and other colleagues. Your legal skills will be developed through research and due diligence, and your presentation skills tested through giving talks and writing articles. You will benefit from a strong network of support in addition to that provided departmentally. Our Head of Graduate Recruitment & Development is always on hand, along with the Training Principal and the Trainee Solicitors’ Committee. The latter meets regularly to discuss training, selection and trainee events, and includes four trainee solicitor representatives (one from each intake). You will receive a competitive salary and benefits package for a trainee solicitor, which includes five weeks’ paid annual leave every year.

Meet our trainee
RUBI KURUVILLA “Joining an international firm means you get the chance to see things from all sides.” My first seat at Trowers & Hamlins was in the Energy and Natural Resources department in London and my second seat was in the Corporate department in Dubai. The quality of work I’ve been exposed to during my training contract has been excellent. In my first seat, we worked for an international government in their dealings with some of the world’s largest oil/ gas companies and also implemented new energy regimes for the country. Trowers & Hamlins is well known for connecting governments and business so it has been fascinating to see this close up. We were also involved in a project that utilised the UK government’s Electricity Market Reform policies; this was a fairly new, still developing area of law that not many firms would have had exposure to. These were all fantastic opportunities to be part of as a trainee. In my second seat, I was involved in several share acquisitions, due diligence exercises, company restructurings, company incorporations, and multiple local law company matters. I was also involved in an Islamic finance transaction with our Banking and Finance department. We work with both local clients in the UAE and international clients in the wider region.
The teams in both my seats so far provided me with many opportunities to take on interesting and important work. My supervisors were willing to give me a lot of freedom and responsibility in running matters, but were also always willing to offer guidance and advice when needed. I have found that the people I work with at Trowers & Hamlins have been inspiring and, at the same time, friendly, approachable and easy to work with. Spending time in Dubai was a fantastic experience. It’s a great place to spend a seat, especially because the firm really looks after you while you’re there. There are fantastic travel opportunities as well (as it is such a global hub) and while I was there I often met up with the firm’s other trainees in the region visiting them in Abu Dhabi, Oman and Bahrain. I have found my training contract at the firm to be challenging, stimulating and, ultimately, a rewarding experience. I am looking forward to my continuous development with the firm.
Meet our trainee
CHARM ATWAL “Having lived and studied in Birmingham, I always wanted to stay here. I’m passionate about the future of cities - especially my own.” There is a real buzz around the city right now. Not only has there been a marked increase of infrastructure projects and ambitious developments happening (including the construction of the brand new Grand Central station, the Library of Birmingham and the HS2, as well as Resorts World Birmingham), but Birmingham has recently become the only city in Europe to be named a Location of the Future by Site Selection (a global inward investment magazine). Trowers & Hamlins has been involved in many of the new developments happening in the city and, for me, the opportunity to work on real projects that contribute to the growth and development of Birmingham has been very exciting. When I was considering firms for a training contract, I wanted to join a firm with an international reputation, where I was involved with high quality, interesting work, but also had a friendly and supportive culture where my contribution was valued. I can honestly say that my training contract with Trowers & Hamlins to date has surpassed all expectations. Whilst in my seat in Housing and Regeneration, I was given a huge amount of responsibility from the
outset and had several matters that I was responsible for with minimal supervision. This is testament to the value the firm places on your contribution and your training, as this facilitates your development of skills crucial to qualification. That said, the team I worked with was very supportive and approachable, which meant that I had no hesitation in asking questions whenever I needed to. During my seat, I was closely involved in a £204 million stock swap deal between two registered providers, which both the London and Birmingham offices worked on. Working so closely on a huge transaction and knowing that my contribution was essential was incredibly rewarding. My second seat was in the Public Sector Commercial team. The work was hugely varied and enjoyable, from researching EU Procurement Law to drafting Deeds of Variation to an existing Leisure Services Contract. I also had the opportunity to work directly with partners and the wider national team. Not only have I been involved in top quality, varied and challenging work as a trainee, I have also been given the opportunity to help develop the overall profile of the firm’s Birmingham office in the West Midlands. I regularly attend business development and networking events with qualified solicitors and partners. This has enabled me to develop soft skills that are crucial beyond qualification. No two trainees are the same and there certainly isn’t a “Trowers type”. The firm prides itself on organic growth and it is evident that you are viewed as a valuable part of the firm’s future. In my opinion, you won’t find the Trowers & Hamlins’ experience anywhere else.
Meet our trainee
AOIFE DEVLIN “As a real estate enthusiast throughout law school, I wanted to join a multi-faceted property firm – the focus at Trowers & Hamlins on where people live and work means I’ve loved every moment.” After almost a year focusing on property law, I am amazed at how varied, complex, politically influenced and fast-paced Trowers & Hamlins’ overall real estate offering is. My first seat was in Housing and Regeneration, for which Trowers & Hamlins boasts a UK market-leading practice. I assisted on the regulatory issues for social housing providers and government agencies during an election year, and this was a fascinating opportunity to learn how intricately social housing is embedded in society. Common discussions in the team centred on the topics of welfare reform, the housing crisis and the bedroom tax. My favourite deals involved buying sites to be developed into student accommodation
outside of London; building a site for the development of 500 new social housing units; and working on the transfer of over £200 million worth of social housing that involved over 2,000 tenanted residential units. I felt a real sense of social purpose on each of these deals and that I was taking on an important role in society by making a small contribution to the delivery of housing – something which is much needed in the UK. I was delighted to join Commercial Property for my second seat. The team acts for a range of clients from private housebuilders, developers (commercial and residential) and property companies, to pension funds and other investors such as private equity houses. I enjoyed the fast-paced environment, working on a number of matters simultaneously and having a close relationship with supervising partners. There was a high level of responsibility and early client contact, which is supported by an open-door policy and an environment that encourages questions.
Meet our trainee
MAURICE WONG “If you are interested in gaining exposure to a wide variety of work in a fast-paced environment, the Corporate department at Trowers & Hamlins is a great place to start.” My first seat was in the firm’s Corporate department where I gained exposure to a wide variety of work from mergers and acquisitions, commercial contracts, corporate finance, re-organisations and restructurings to investment funds, intellectual property, information technology, joint ventures and private equity. During my seat, I produced the articles of association for a property management company; assisted with the disclosure exercise in the sale of a cloud computing company; contributed to the due diligence report for the acquisition of a retail park by a real estate investment adviser; and drafted the secondary placing agreement for a AIM-listed mining company looking to raise additional funds. I also prepared the chairman’s script for a general meeting - it was exciting to subsequently attend the meeting and see first-hand how my work was put to use. My second seat in Housing and Regeneration allowed me to build on the skills, knowledge and experience gained in my first seat. Much of my work was on the development side for housing associations, where the firm is a market leader. Trainees are given a high level of responsibility and are expected to handle smaller matters with minimal supervision. Managing a number of my own files and being the first port of call for clients helped grow my confidence and my abilities. In addition to learning a new area of law, I got involved throughout the conveyance process assisting with reports on title; drafting documents such as deeds of variation, deeds of covenant, deeds of easement and an escrow agreement; obtaining consents; and completing the purchase of development sites. I was also exposed to non-property related work as well. Many housing associations seek advice in relation to their corporate governance and as the firm advises on regulatory matters, there is the opportunity for trainees to get involved in these areas. I’ve had a great 12 months at the firm, and I’m looking forward to my next two seats and beyond.

Meet our trainee
EMILY PUTZ “The real estate market and the provision of housing has to be one of the most topical issues for society across the UK - our clients are central to this, which makes the work Trowers & Hamlins does incredibly engaging and exciting.” So far during my training contract, I’ve completed seats in the firm’s Housing and Regeneration and Projects and Construction teams. Both seats gave me a chance to experience work within the firm’s core real estate sector, but from two different perspectives. I worked with a real mixture of clients across both seats, from developers in the private sector to public bodies such as London boroughs or registered providers of housing. It was great to work on projects that will visibly make a difference to the city and to those who work and live within it. I also assisted on a number of large residential regeneration developments, one of my highlights being our recent work on the Olympic Park legacy project. It was clear in both my seats that Trowers & Hamlins’ knowledge of the sectors is outstanding and both departments lead their fields in a number of areas. The level of knowledge of the fee-earners I work with is incredibly impressive and I’m learning from sector leaders on a daily basis. Much of my work was focused on the transactional side of large property deals during my seat in Housing and Regeneration. This involved assisting with the acquisition of sites, the drafting of development agreements, and the ancillary work that comes with property deals (such as completing Stamp Duty Land Tax returns). I was also responsible for a number of transactions on a smaller scale in my first six months, which meant having direct client contact and a hands-on experience of the day-to-day file management of matters. In Projects and Construction, I continued to work on similar deals but from the construction lawyer’s side of the transaction. I was often involved with the review of consultant’s appointments, drafting collateral warranties, and updating provisions in building contracts. The team also advises our public authority clients on EU public procurement matters, which involved some especially technical areas of law to challenge the trainees in the department.

Meet our trainee
LYDIA CLATWORTHY “Trowers & Hamlins is the only international law firm headquartered in London with an office in Exeter, so it offers the best of both worlds.” The opportunities available at Trowers & Hamlins are completely different to regional firms. We are heavily involved with ‘city’ work whilst being based outside the capital in a historic part of Devon. There is seamless integration and assimilation with the firm’s other offices, so high quality work and extensive know-how is always readily available. Real Estate is a core specialism in the Exeter office. I’ve focused on this in my seats in Housing and Regeneration and Projects and Construction. We act for a range of diverse
clients and, as a trainee, I have been able to gain in-depth knowledge of the property and development market. The time I spent in both these seats have helped teach me how to deliver thorough, bespoke and practical commercial legal advice. I love being based in Devon; working in an openplan environment where I know all my colleagues suits me, not least because it is a great platform for sharing knowledge and creative ideas. However, I really enjoy going to the London office every few months and I’ve always felt truly part of the fabric of the firm. If you are looking for a training contract in the South West with the infrastructure of a city firm and an opportunity to work closely with partners, then Trowers & Hamlins could well be for you.
Meet our trainee
JAMES PEARSON “Trowers & Hamlins has a very clear vision for Manchester and its national practice, and trainees form a crucial part of the on-going future development.” I chose to start my career in Manchester because it is an energetic and diverse city that is on a mission to grow, making it a very exciting place to work. I specifically chose Trowers & Hamlins because of the unique combination of public and private sector work available, and the variety of the seats. I knew that I would be afforded a comprehensive training contract whilst working in a friendly and supportive environment. My first seat at the firm was in the Housing and Regeneration department, where I focused on governance. This is essentially corporate work for public sector and charitable clients. The type of work that I was involved with included assisting in the post-completion stages of large-scale voluntary transfers; board reports; reviewing, drafting and amending constitutional documents; and research. I also attended client meetings and industry conferences that really helped me understand the clients and provide the right advice. This seat was fascinating, particularly in an election year where social housing was at the top of the political agenda.
As a testament to the variety of work in the seat, I also worked closely with the consumer credit team dealing with the principal regulator (the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)) on advising companies on how to become authorised with them. This involved working directly with the FCA to secure authorisation, as well as working closely with clients to ensure they had the policies in place to meet the regulator’s requirements. I was offered a great deal of support and guidance from the team, which has enabled me to make progress and develop my legal skills. Trowers & Hamlins has a strong collegiate atmosphere that is fostered by the integration of national practice area teams throughout all the UK offices. This means that trainees will have the chance to work on matters that involve a number of the firm’s offices. As well as an extensive induction in London, all trainees undertake regular training, both generic and specialist, to develop core skills. There is a great deal of scope for participating in business development, particularly in Manchester. I have been able to attend events where I could engage with key strategic stakeholders across the region, and I have also been to national sector events, in-house training sessions, external briefings, and client lunches and drinks.
Meet our trainee
ROSIE-MAY BLACKWELL “I’ve seen first-hand throughout my training contract that Trowers & Hamlins is a firm committed to outstanding training, looking to invest in future partners of the firm.” From the moment I first read about Trowers & Hamlins, I was intrigued by the firm’s unusual combination of work. From being leaders in public sector work, working on corporate deals or for high-net-worth individuals in the Middle East, it allows for varied challenges throughout your training contract. Being a mid-sized firm, Trowers & Hamlins offers the golden balance between two extremes. You are given a high level of responsibility and good quality work as well as being able to strike a work-life balance. It is a firm aware of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and I have been given the opportunity to be the trainee representative on our CSR committee (something which I am passionate about!). The culture of the firm is eclectic, friendly and approachable – an environment in which I have been able to maximise my potential. I sat in the Housing and Regeneration department for my first seat. I was mostly involved in governance work and assisted local authorities in setting up Arms Lengths Management Organisations (ALMOs). I was also involved in the completion of Large Scale Voluntary Transfers (LSVTs), liaising with the HCA, and negotiating contracts on behalf of our clients. My second seat was in the Public Sector Commercial department. My day-to-day work in the department was varied and at times quite challenging, particularly because the areas of law involved were not taught at law school. Being the sole trainee in the department, I was given a lot of responsibility and independence on projects. Although initially it was a steep learning curve, I was always thoroughly supported by other fee-earners and was allowed to ask any ‘silly questions’ I had. During my time in the department, I assisted with completions, attended meetings, undertook complex research tasks, and prepared presentations. This taught me the key principles of procurement law and which aspects to bear in mind when advising a client. I quickly learnt that it is imperative to keep on top of new case law decisions and changes in legislation and, with the change of government and the summer 2015 budget announcement during my time in the department, it was very interesting to see how political changes affected our advice.

SØREN GUROCK “Fast-paced, multi-faceted and often front-page news. That’s what you can expect from your work at Trowers & Hamlins.” My first seat in the Housing and Regeneration department was a tremendous learning experience. I was exposed to work on substantial developments across the UK from day one, including the former Olympic sites and other prime locations in London. I was given considerable responsibility to drive transactions forward and negotiate contracts with the other side, whilst being fully supported throughout by my supervisors. What is truly fascinating about the firm’s work in Housing and Regeneration is the variety of work streams, all embedded to deliver prime infrastructure to connect communities and business. I worked on numerous regeneration schemes and redevelopments in my seat, all of which are aimed at increasing the smart use of living space across the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Private Wealth team in my second seat. For wealth to be enduring, it needs to be invested sustainably. I assisted on a variety of matters during my time in this seat, including advising one client who was looking to invest into real estate and another who wanted advice on relocating to the UK. I am enjoying a rich and diverse training contract at the firm that emphasises the value it places in the individual.

Meet our future trainee
SAM ROBINSON “Trainees here are provided with a truly diverse learning experience - a mixture of public, private and international work.” When I first met the team from Trowers & Hamlins at a presentation at my university, it was clear that this firm was different. The firm’s strength in Banking and Finance and Corporate appealed to me, as did their market leading Housing and Regeneration practice and varied client base. Add to this the strong connections the firm has in the Middle and Far East, it meant I was delighted to secure a place on the firm’s summer vacation scheme in 2015. I spent one week with the Housing and Regeneration team and another in the Corporate department. I gained exposure to a great variety of tasks, from researching into particular aspects of planning law to reviewing a contract between a provider of social housing and a local authority. I had the opportunity to meet a huge number of people within the firm, from trainees to partners and even clients as well. I could see that trainees are considered the next generation of leaders for the firm. They are actively encouraged to develop knowledge and skills in a supportive and friendly environment. Outside the office, the social activities we got involved with were great fun too. Those on the scheme participate in the firm’s training contract assessment centre. This is a demanding but enjoyable opportunity to demonstrate commercial acumen and skills during various activities. Candidates who impress on the vacation scheme and during the assessment centre are invited back for a partner-led training contract interview, and training contracts are offered to successful candidates shortly afterwards. The process was challenging but surprisingly enjoyable as there are opportunities to demonstrate your personality and motivations. I think Trowers & Hamlins offers an ideal environment for personal and professional growth. The firm provides an environment where I feel I can ask questions, learn from experienced colleagues and, crucially, get along with like-minded people. I am excited to start the next step of what I hope will be a vibrant and rewarding career with the firm.
