GRANBY YOUTH FOOTBALL, INC. FOOTBALL COACHES The goals of Granby Youth Football is to enrich the lives of young athletes by providing a program where they will have fun and develop the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and commitment to hard work. We encourage scholastic achievement, competition, and playing well equally while acting as caring role models. As a coach for the Granby Youth Football (GYF), all coaches shall: 

 

Be approved by GYF President and the GYF Director of Coaching in advance without exception. All coaches shall fill out the coach’s application, pass the background check and interview with the Director of Coaching prior to acceptance. Consider safety as their first concern. Complete and be certified in GYF funded Heads Up Tackling, USA Football Age Specific Training U8-U16, NYSCA Training, NYSCA Concussion Training, NYSCA Bullying Prevention Training, NYSCA Protection Against Abuse Training and Pediatric/Adult First Aid/CPR AED Training by August 1 of the playing year. All coaches are required to provide GYF with a two year commitment or must reimburse GYF the full cost of the training provided. Be familiar and use the GYF Communication Plan when interacting with Parents and Players. Be familiar, use and follow the GYF Concussion Plan to the letter. Be familiar with the GYF Emergency Action Plan. Emphasize and celebrate academic achievement. Beginning on the first day of school, Thursday’s is academic night. All players must bring in their Academic Accountability Report and submit it to the Team Manager. MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT! Not discriminate. It is the policy of the GYF not to discriminate in its policies and practices with respect to terms, playing time or conditions because of an individual's race, color, religion, sex, national origin, height, weight, marital status, political belief, genetic information, disability or handicap which does not impair an individual's ability to perform adequately in that individual's particular position or activity. VIOLATIONS OF THIS POLICY WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION FROM GYF. Be organized and use a practice plan for every practice. All drills shall be written out and timed. Be efficient with our time. Have your player information, release forms, and contract book in your possession at all GYF events. Encourage, teach and promote sportsmanship and teamwork at every turn.

Give your players plenty of water breaks. Coaches shall not deny players access to water or restroom breaks. Be familiar with GYF Heat and Hydration Plan. Coaches shall take no chances with heat exhaustion. Abide by the direction and shall not challenge the decisions of the GYF Safety Officer as it pertains to player safety, weather and field conditions. Read the warning sticker on the helmet to all players three times during the first week of practice. Must use and establish a “buddy system”. Pair up players at the first practice. Keep in mind, many players quit simply because the feel left out or have not bonded with others. Drill in groups of 5-10 players no larger and shall not exceed 15 minutes. Promote and use Level of Contact in accordance with your training to increase player safety by reducing helmet-to helmet contact. Use Air, Bag, Control, Thud, and Live drills in order to progress players using a Player Progression Development Model (PPDM). If players can’t execute the fundamentals of the drill, do not progress them beyond their ability or confidence level! Maximize the use of air and bag drills, limit the use of live tackling drills to small spaces. Prohibit the use of high speed ramming drills and or daily scrimmages. Promote, teach and use the Heads Up® Tackling System as prescribed by USA Football. Use it exclusively, no other technique shall be taught. Teach in depth, safe and age appropriate blocking techniques in accordance with your U7 –U14 Coaching certification. Be positive and enthusiastic at all times to encourage our players. Be consistent. Enforce player and parent ethics equally in accordance with GYF and Northern Connecticut Football League By-Laws. Not touch a player below the waist our on the facemask. Do not touch a player when we appear angry. Not smoke, chew tobacco, or drink alcohol in front of players or their parents at GYF events. Not wear clothes that promote tobacco, alcohol or firearms at GYF events. Not use abusive or foul language. Not be allowed to score 50 points unless the other team is within two touchdowns. Do not put yourself in a position to score more than 50 points. As a precaution ask the referee to warn your team when they score. ANY TEAM SCORING 50 POINTS SHALL FORFEIT THE GAME AND THE COACH WILL BE TERMINATED FROM GYF WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Insert your secondary offense or defense and substitute freely when ahead by three touchdowns.

Have second and possibly third string quarterbacks and running backs ready to play in the above situation. Not blitz, run outside, pass or give the ball to your star athletes when in the above situation in the second half. Stay inbounds, run the clock. Do not substitute your star players late in the game. Kneel to run the clock out if at the goal line. At the beginning of each game, Head coaches shall meet with the referee to clarify any “Special League Rules “or concerns. Not arguing with referees or opposing team coaches. Referee judgment calls shall not be openly challenged. You may only talk to officials to clarify the number of players committing the foul. Protest shall be managed in accordance with NCFL rules. ANY COACH EJECTED FROM THE GAME SHALL FORFEIT THE GAME AND THE COACH WILL BE TERMINATED FROM GYF WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Expel a player from the game if the player throws his/her helmet in anger or removes his/her shoulder pads in anger. COLLECT HIS OR HER EQUIPMENT ON THE SPOT! Report his/her actions to the GYF President. Not have sleep overs of any kind. Report any player that has missed four unexcused practices in a row to the GYF President immediately. Retrieve equipment from expelled players or those that quit immediately.

I agree to abide by the above guidelines as a condition of coaching for the Granby Bears. I agree to resolve any issue with the GYF Director of Coaching and not in public or in a court of law. I understand that bad mouthing the system, fellow coaches or the program in public will not be tolerated. To do so takes the joy out of coaching and jeopardizes the success of the program. I can be terminated at any time by the GYFC Board, with or without cause with no remedy or review. I agree to accept the decision and actions of the GYFC Board without repercussions. I will hold the GYFC, its members, and its affiliates harmless against any termination.
